Falling

-------------
Little traveller, you are confused. To you this is startling, falling into the abyss - for you cannot see me. It is a strange feeling - as many of your experiences lately have been for you. Let me explain.

There was a place I liked to visit. The tall ones call them Ages, but I am not sure you would understand that term. You are not one of them, I guess, little traveller. I wonder why are you here.

It was not a spectacular place - although all places have merits - but I enjoyed its simplicity and its peace. I would drift through this void between worlds now and then to watch its people and murmur thoughts and dreams to them in the wind.

One day, I entered the place and found it greatly changed. One of the tall ones had come to the world, and his words twisted it. It was... fragile. Thin. With his words he had torn away its foundation, leaving little between it and the void to keep the whole structure of the world from tearing and warping - cataclysmic destruction and annihilation.

While the people of this place could not see these damages as I could, they could see their society - simple and peaceful before - twisted and disfigured in much the same way. It was abhorrent, like the old days when the tall ones ruled over and controlled us. I hated it.

But I stayed. The people learned from the tall man how to write - their Ages brought life to my dreams, guiding me to places I had never found before. I was interested by this, but the cruelty of the tall man grew greater every day. He burnt the world, controlled the people, destroyed the past to build a mockery of the Cavern. I hoped for someone who would rise to restore rightness to the place, to bring down the tall man and build up the foundation again. I sought to influence some of the people toward this goal - one I chose in particular to lead them, but there was too much fear and too little power to resist the tall man and his knowledge.

Another tall man came to the world, the son of the first. I saw the influence of his words, clear and true - bracing and supporting the foundation again. I saw him speak to the people I spoke to, to listen to my dreams spoken by them.

I saw him understand them.

More words joined his, bending the place this way and that. The healthy and unhealthy words struggled in the place, and the world shook. The words contended with each other and it became hard to understand, contorted by the war between them.

While I was investigating these new words and the struggle, I saw the son challenge the father, and the father cast the son down with anger. He was still in control, stronger and with more influence than the son. I feared he would prevail - and then there would be no one who could right his wrongs. There was no justice in it and my anger overflowed. I reached into the fibers of the place, through the fragile existence into this void behind it, and I tore through the fragile shell.

When my anger cooled, I stood back and looked into the wound I had opened in the ground. The tall ones came, the father chasing the son. Through the wound, the son fled - diving into the unknown fissure to flee his certain death. It was foolish but brave. He had bested the father, although his victory was a minor one, and I was thankful for that. I took hold of him, and when we had descended for a short while he took his book and travelled away through the void, leaving it to fall.

Out of curiosity, I followed the book, and it fell to the place above the Cavern. I often wonder why it did so. Perhaps the father’s words, crafted out of ignorance and longing, carried more purpose than he understood. Perhaps the dreams of my chosen one positioned the world at such a pivotal point. Perhaps there was a higher fate for it.

In the meantime, the place I loved was still ruled by the father. Despite the successes of the son, and the alterations I could see him place - one after another - attempting to brace the place up... despite this, the foundation was thinning out. Weakening. Then you came, bewildered and confused, and set things right again.

I do not know why you are here, or what you thought you were doing, but you have done well. The father is now imprisoned, and no longer can he twist worlds with his pride and anger. Perhaps I would be angry at you for the end of my beloved place, the shattering of the world into lifeless fragments - but this would have come regardless of your actions. It has long been inevitable. You let its people leave and the many good things of the world, the dreams and the memories they have of it, will be born anew.

You know the son, little traveller, and somehow this falling is his plan for you. Perhaps his own experience made him naive about the void, for he planned for you to fall in it. You are fragile - much more fragile than a written book. Even his little experience with the void was sheltered by my grasp, though he could not feel it. Perhaps he trusts that the same will happen to you. Perhaps he trusts me, understands me, though he cannot see me.

I will vindicate his trust. As you fall I will be here to guide you, to soften your descent. You were with the son, and you defeated the father, the bringer of pride. I will keep you safe to where the son intended for you to go. I will bring you home.

----------

	Spoiler

Rand Q&A in Kirel (5/19/12 at 2:30 PM EST)

There's a Rand Miller question and answer session today May 18th, in Kirel, at 2:30 PM EST (which means right now) until around 3:30 PM EST. I should have posted about this earlier, but I was only reminded about it a short time ago. Since I dunno if any of you can link in now (Kirel's pretty busy!), I figured the least I could do would be to post anything good while it's going on, and link later to an official chatlog.

Live updates:

-Q: Will the new realMYST ever be on any non-iOS systems? (Since it was made with Unity, which can make cross-platform games.)

A: "it seems fairly easy to consider undated versions for Mac and PC; just not as sure for Android".
Ed note: I assume he means "updated".

-Q: iPad version of Riven?
A: Cyan is "making progress with an iPad version."

-Q: Will Myst 3 and Myst 4 ever be made available through venues like Steam?
A: Cyan is trying to get the "right people to say okay" to allowing this.

-Q: Would Cyan do a Kickstarted to fund games?

A: Cyan has "gotten so much feedback from fans and friends encouraging us to do it", but that there are two issues. One issue is which project to propose. Apparently they're considering two ("one Myst related and one completely new"). The second is that "we need to get enough money from realMYST to fund a good Kickstarter proposal with some great artwork and a convincing video".

-Q: Will MOUL ever have any plot?
A: Rand would like there to be some plot in MOUL in the future, but it's not likely to happen in the near future because of resources. However, he would "like nothing more than to see some new stuff happening in MOUL."

-Q:Did Cyan had ever had long-term plans for letting players build and change Ages?
A: Rand said that "the first step was just simple customization- like you see in the Reltos." Then people could have "options in adjusting params of books." Eventually, there would have been a Nexus that linked to explorer created Ages, and Guilds such as the Maintainers and the Cartographers would have gotten to help check them for safety and map them. The idea of having two Nexi was so that "explorers would know that they were linking to Ages from "new" writers."

-Q: Any news on the Myst movie?
A: Apparently Hollywood swings between momentum and lulls. Some interest was there a few weeks ago, but not it's quiet. Rand says "it's a slow process, and not one I understand very well. But we're cautiously optimistic."

-Q: What Ages would you like to live on in real life?
A: Garrison. Possibly Minkata because of "wide open spaces". Maybe Teledahn, but "too muggy".

-Q: Any update on content licensing for Open Source?
A: "We are continuing to work on more and more opening of open source. I'm sorry for the slow progress, but we've got some ideas to speed things up a bit."

Riven Mapping and Measurements

Well, not had much to do at work today so got out my big maps of the Riven Islands and started working out some measurements (well, as much as you can with a computer generated image).

For some of the footpaths/stairways I have had to assume (educated guesswork really) a width of 3 or 4 feet depending on where it is - once I had that determined it was a simple matter to work out that 2mm on my ruler was roughly equivalent to 1ft of real measurement - now I appreciate that this is largely speculation (before anybody shoots me down in flames and tells me how wrong I am, lol) but it felt like a fun exercise to get involved in.

I was a bit surprised at the length of the footbridge from Temple Island (The Dome) to the Magalev Island where Gehns Temple is, so much so that I mapped it out in the office with bright yellow pvc tape (I work in a large office and today it was empty apart from me).

Based on my previous assumptions regarding the footpath/stairway widths some of the measurements work out as follows:

Footbridge: 42' 6" in length, assumed width of 3'.

Golden Dome: 63' in diameter (No idea of the height as the map is 'top down' only)

Gehn's Temple: 22' 6" long by 13' wide, stairs down to Magalev about 5' wide by 13' in length.

Fire Marble Dome: 12' in diameter (again, height unknown).

Katran's Prison: 17' 6" in diameter (height unknown but could be estimated from a screenshot and rough estimation from the video clip based on normal ceiling height and how tall Katran (or the actress that plays her) is.

Prison Fire Marble Dome: 18' in diameter - presumably the Prison Island map is drawn to a different scale which is why there is such a difference between its Fire Marble Dome and Temple Island's, which of course would make Katran's Prison Dome actually smaller than 17' 6", however having said that I have assumed a footpath width of 3' 6" which would make the Dome diameter of 18' about right.
Were the Fire Marble Domes of different size? I thought they were all the same - of course I could be wrong.

I would love to find a huge field somewhere and map this out with posts and string if only to get an overall impression of how big it is.

Obviously this is just a silly exercise that kept me amused for a few hours and I am sure there will be many who can point out that I haven't taken xxx into consideration etc but I enjoyed doing it and I have a load more to do on days that are equally uneventful.
And the best part is, I was getting paid while I was doing it - that's what comes of being 2 weeks ahead with my work...

Now I have bored you all silly it's time for a quick cup of coffee then back to the drawing board - literally...

Myst Book of Atrus Comic

Hi guys,

I've started working on a comic adaptation of "Myst The Book of Atrus". I love Myst and BoA is my favorite book of all time.

I've done two 'parts', 35 pages, so far. You can read / follow it here: mystcomic.smackjeeves.com

Комикс “Мист”, теперь на русском! It's also in Russian! One Myst fan has been translating the comic (which i think is pretty cool). You can see it here: http://a-comics.ru/comics/myst-book-of-atrus/1

It's a really fun project. I've wanted to do something like this for a long time. I hope you like it.

Trine 2 50% off on steam

Yeah, it's pretty quiet around here lately. Anyway, thought I'd share this for those who don't check steam all that often.

Trine 2 is 50% off this weekend on Steam, bringing it's price down to 7.50 for the regular or only 12.50 for collectors. The first Trine is 80% off, or a measly 2.00. Both are well worth the full price and basically a steal at this price.

Both games are very good 3 player local puzzle/action/platformers, with an emphasis on creative use of physics and the character's different powers. Both are also MAC compatible, for you MAC gamers out there.

Hi,

Just wanted to add that Cyan have granted me a licence to produce 'Games Paraphernalia' - specifically things related to Myst and Riven which is where I will be concentrating my efforts.
I will be starting with 'The Riven Collection' hopefully around July of this year - suppliers are still being sourced for a variety of goods: Mugs, Plates, Coasters, Placemats, Mouse-mats, Facecloth and Hand Towels (possibly).
Other ideas are in the pipeline and I will be announcing the full range in due course (obviously everything I produce is subject to Cyan's approval but as long as I produce good quality items I cannot see that being a problem).
In the meantime, here is the front page of my online brochure that I want to create - wish me luck...

Riven Daggers For Sale ????

APPROVED.

"The Riven Dagger is a trademark of Cyan Worlds. Used with permission"

I have a friend that has an original Museum Replica Dagger, He sent me a scan of it with the actual measurements.

As some of you may know, Museum Replica's daggers are mass produced and probably made from Molds. Yes if you square the top T part & the blade tip, it is not square, its offset by 3-4mm.

The 40 daggers I had made are drawn with a program, then sent to be LASER cut, so they are perfectly symmetrical.

I then beveled the blade enough so it does not cut, I then applyed a first coat of metal paint that makes a hammered effect.

3 other coats of acrylic paint where used to do a rusted effect like in this pic here:

then the last coat was a Super-tough polyurethane satin varnish.

Final results:

I will be giving a percentage of the sales to Cyan Worlds ,the rest is to pay off the
computer drawn model, metal, laser cutting, metal and acrylic paint, 2 grinding discs and 6 buffing pads and finaly labour.

Let me know what you think,
Thank you

You're Seeing Things

Re-greetings everyone who remembers me! No doubt there are quite a few new folks hanging around here; I'm an old member from back in the days (aka Rivenguild if that name still floats around once in a while).

A lot of the my old friends haven't heard much from me (even my fellow Ahro guildies from WoW) for a while. Mostly I've been keeping busy with my day job and desperately trying to get things together with my writing. I like to consider my obsession with detail as a blessing, but coupled with my lack of focus it's turning into a... um...

I was going to say something there. What was it? Pony?

Well, no matter. I've been wanting to get back in touch with everyone and along with my desire to make more time to write, I was forced to re-assess my expenses after finally sucking it up and getting braces. That meant killing my cable and numerous other subscriptions (WoW) plus the most horrifying of cost-saving measures: agreeing to attend even the most boring meetings at work as long as someone brought the donuts.

And they brought bagels instead. Ever try chewing a bagel with braces? They're on to me.

So, I hope you've all been having fun here. You'll probably mostly see me hanging around the Creativity Corner but I just wanted to leave a little "I'm Back" post here.

Myst Education: A Teacher's Resource

Hello folks,

It's been a long while since I last posted here so I apologise if I've put this in the wrong place. So, the reason for my post - last year I completed my Masters in Secondary Education specialising in Visual Art. Before that I'd achieved a Bachelor degree in Fine Art and have done several years of non-University art training. During my Masters degree I had to build an educational resource around an artwork or body of work for one of my courses. It was the major assignment for that course so much effort and many hours went into it.

As you may have guessed from the fact I'm posting here, the artwork I based this around was Myst, and to a slightly lesser extent its sequels. And yes, I did use these forums as a resource The assignment required the resource to be electronic/ technology based so I built it using Blogger as I'm familiar with it and find it easy to use. Originally I was simply going to take the page down but rather I've decided I'll leave it up - for a while at least - for anyone who may to interested to use.

As mentioned this was for an art course so it focuses on art and how art is viewed/ taught in the NSW, Australia secondary curriculum. Still, folks teaching other subjects and in other countries will probably still find it useful. Even if you're not a teacher you might find some of the content interesting (at least I hope so ). It's full of teacher and education speak, but hopefully it won't be too hard to understand for those who aren't familure with that metalanguage. I'm happy to explain any terms, however.

So please, if you're interested, head on over to the site and have a look. I'd be very interested to hear what people thing.

Cheers.

I got Myst ME working just fine on Windows Vista using compatibility mode, run as administrator, disable visual themes, uninstall and reinstall old Quicktime, etc. Only a few sound glitches but no freezes. The only problem is I can't save a game, period. When I go to save the game, it brings up the dialog box but doesn't let me type anything. There's just the SAVEGAME folder with nothing under it and the search bar at the top (see attached image). I tried downloading other people's gamesaves and putting them in the folder, so perhaps I could write over them, but they don't register/show up when I try and save (they are .mys files so why aren't they there?) When I click on these .mys files outside of the game, it launches Myst (but they bring me back to the very beginning of the game.) I really want to play this game but I can't leave it open all the time. What's a girl to do? I did a search and noticed this is a thing that happened to some people with Riven, but not for Myst ME. Help please! Ideas?

Myst in Retrospect: An essay series

Well, guys, I don't suppose any of you expected to see me again. Actually most of you probably don't remember me at all so I should preface this by saying I used to be a fairly active user around here and I drew a not-particularly-funny fan comic for a few years. I've been away lately, but still a fan.

I return to you all now because I wanted to drop a quick link to my blog, where I'll be running a series of retrospective essays on the entire series. That's all six games and all three novels, all to be discussed in probably too much depth over the course of the next few months. There's also a chance, if this all goes well, that I might find time for some original illustrations, too. So don't miss out! The essay on Myst (the first one!) went up today. Check it out right here. (Fair warning: not everything I say is complimentary.)

Well, it's nice to be back, everyone. Hope you enjoy the essay.

Shorah Everyone
I wasn't sure if anyone over here were fans of the Journeyman Project series but if there are I would think that they would be interested in something that I came across. Its a fan recreation of the original game with elements of Pegasus prime incorporated that's being made in blender. While its still in the pre-production phase I thought it might be something that some might like to keep an eye on.

Similarities in the Prima Guides

Just a couple of questions...

Even though these guides have different outer covers, is all the content inside exactly the same between the three?

On another note, the RealMyst guide should be different from all of them...

Same question for the three below:

My guess is the first two are the same, but the third is different from both of them.
Thanks!

Anyone here familiar with this band? They're a bit heavier at times (particularly their first album) but it's really fantastic stuff. Their songwriting is stunningly beautiful and their lyrics are pretty much unparalleled. They have six albums that make up one big universe with various storylines and characters, and they use a lot of Lovecraftian elements (their band name is actually an homage to Robert E. Howard, an author who was a big fan of Lovecraft's and whose style is very similar to it as well) and have clear Tolkien influences as well.

Original Myst problems on XP SP3

Ok, so I managed to find this game at a local used game store. I got it home, put the disc in the drive, and it installed fine. When I got to launch the game, it gives me an error message. I have looked all over(checked this site and google. plus a few other places), and no one seems to have had the same error as I. There are people with similar problems, but none of the solutions to them work. It's also worth noting that yes, I am running it in compatibility mode for Windows 95, 640x480, 256 colors, and no, it does not help.

Not sure if this little bit of info helps, but the Myst disc says that it's, "For MPC/WINDOWS 3.1"

The error in question:

Time honored traditions are rare these days, mainly because so many of us are caught up in the hunt for the Higgs boson, and we forget even to brush our teeth. But one tradition stands above all others, so rock solid that the National Institute of Standards and Technology synchronizes its Atomic Clock with its annual appearance. I am, of course, talking about

Jerle's Christmas Present!!!

Because I'm a whole week earlier this year, I've had the opportunity to scour the four corners of the Earth for the best possible present ever. Little did I realize it would be found so close to (my) home, and so shipping will not be a problem as it apparently has been in the past (given that Jerle reports that she has never, in fact, received our gift, but she is optimistic they will appear soon).

Here it is:

Yessiree, it is the INuke Boom Box, in all its 8 feet wide by 4 feet tall, 700 pounds, 10,000 watts of power glory. The $29,999.99 price tag should not present a problem, as I'm sure donations will easily cover that as long as Jerle is (very) patient about the actual delivery date.

So raise a glass of eggnog with your favorite supplemental beverage added, and let us all toast Jerle:

Ahyoheek Cards

The game of Ahyoheek as portrayed in MYST Online: URU Live is an enjoyable game that has become a strong bond shared by the MYST community. Shortly after learning of the game, my cousin and I began playing games of Ahyoheek using a deck of standard playing cards, where the different suits represented beetles, pens, or pages. For his Christmas gift this year, I decided to use an online site called The Game Crafter to create a customized deck of Ahyoheek cards for him. He loves the appearance of the MYST series of games as much as he does the gameplay, so I worked hard to make sure that the graphics on these cards were worthy of representing the rich art of the D'ni culture and MYST games.

This image displays the back of the cards, the front of all three cards, and the box they would be sold in.

What I want to know from you guys is, what would you be willing to pay for this game? Is $15 too steep? Would you want to pay more? I am presently waiting on Cyan Worlds' legal department to get back to me as to whether or not I can sell these- hopefully I would be able to sell them both in the online store here and in some local game shops.

How I Came to D'ni for Glasses

Looking through some old files today I found this old story I wrote up for... actually, I don't really remember. I wrote it for something. It was near when MOULagain opened and I got my first experience of Uru Live (as is somewhat explained in story, for my Uru account G. Loa [which sounds vaguely like a legit name, right? ]). I'm not sure what the pictures were, although I remember what most of them were, basically (they were more or less my first screenshots in Uru Live [screenshots, not KI shots. I only started really taking KI shots a lot when my computer just started putting up black images for any regular screenshots]) - so unless I find them again they will have to remain a mystery.. (and yes, out of character I started with a single-minded focus to get those goggles to complete my appearance, so I felt I should give it some in-character reasoning). Some spoilers. How I Came to D'ni for Glassesand ended up staying anyway
So, well, after briefly toying with starting my story in media res, and leaving you gentle readers in suspense about the title for most of the piece, I figure I should probably explain.
I came to D'ni for glasses. Well, D'ni goggles that I could use as glasses. With my poor vision and occasionally absent minded and energetic lifestyle, I break a lot of glasses, you see. Also, I had seen a couple of the goggles before (yet nobody would sell them, even though most of my friends who had them said they were just nuisances), and they looked awesome. With all the other things you could do with them, and how they just apparently were lying around somewhere for free - well, it wasn't too far to New Mexico for me - a short detour on my planned summer trip to Mexico - and why not take such an easy opportunity?
Well, turned out to be not-so-easy. Turns out that the goggles were not where friends had told me they were. Rather, they were in an area that was - from all research I could do, and from what my friends told me, at least - inaccessible to those who had not gone on Yeesha's Journey. Well, that was a bit of a stretch. Most of my friends seemed to approve of it, though. Nothing I'd heard about Yeesha had been overly bad, and nobody had gotten grievously injured. Furthermore, I had read many accounts about the journey, including detailed descriptions of how everything had worked. I could probably get it done quickly - visiting some of my dear friends in the process - then continue my vacation with my new goggles. Not-so-easy, but still easy.
"I probably know more about why you're here than you do... You felt called here, just like the others." I didn't really want to argue with the man, and to my experience he is a very intelligent and friendly fellow. Still, I nodded and continued on with the concrete assurance that he was wrong (unless you all came for such technological insights and are just hiding it for odd reasons, which makes you the sneakiest community of people on the planet ...that's what you get when many are fans of a popular adventure puzzle game, I guess, though... I'm on to you...).
Ahem. So I knew he was wrong. Went through anyway, following the cryptic, well, mumbo jumbo of Yeesha's "request" and continued on. Sat in my pretty little clone of an Age and started unhastily to visit various the locales I had been told about many times before. For some odd reason, the first place I chose to explore was Payiferen - the desert pod machine.
That's when things clicked - at least, the first subtle time. The place is not especially popular among the photographs and videos sent home and posted online. The few that exist show what is mentioned to be rare visits by interesting wildlife, or other scenes of the bright sunbeams and other fancy stuff. I must have come in at night, or perhaps a storm - haven't been there since to look more closely at things. It was gloomy, dark, and foreboding.
[picture]This is about what I picture Dante's depiction of Hell to look like.
Perhaps it is odd that this abandoned piece of junk kindled my interest like no soaring piece of tourist photography had before. It was tangible. It was mysterious - not in the high excitement of the great journeys and puzzles of the D'ni and friends, but in an entirely mundane way. How was it made? How does it work? What did it signify? What did others see in it before?
Moving on somewhat abruptly, as I am afraid I can pull no more significance out of that lonely visit, there were two more early visits I made with similar impacts. My next explorations were in the City itself, and in Eder Gira (with the intent of completing one quarter of my Journey in my quest for my goggles). In D'ni, I got lost. Dreadfully lost, and for some reason I had forgotten even to put shoes on. Anyone with the slightest idea of what the city looks like will have some idea of what that felt like afterwards (although at the moment, I somehow missed that fact in my focus on how lost I was). There was another not-so-picturesque thing I saw, although perhaps it is more just the function that is forgotten, while the form is seen as nice. I saw a signpost.
[picture]This one, to be exact.
I had never thought, in all my various fancies of the stories I heard, or the strategems for getting my goggles, of using these signposts as, well, signposts, before. They were decoration - beautiful decoration - but I had never thought of them as actually functional. An actual mundane purpose, with just the same mystery as I felt in the pod - an overlooked and totally normal place of mystery. Now, I would like to say that straight from this revelation I was able to speed my way to my destination, but indeed I was not. In fact, I must have misinterpreted the sign, because I ran off in the wrong direction entirely. It's the thought that counts, though.
Anyway, to Eder Gira. To make a very long story (not that the Age was particularly confusing, but just because it's a whole Age with rather little story in this narrative of mine at the moment) shorter, I'll jump straight to the view that really caught my attention and brought out the second drive of exploration that keeps me here. It against wasn't the most beautiful view possible, nor was it here an especially surprising view. I knew, from what I had learned about the Age from others, everything I saw there. I had seen them all from more stunning angles, even.
[picture]
It wasn't the great mystery of exploring and finding that great surprise or stunning shot - indeed, with my inundation with photographs and video of the sites before, those are much rarer perhaps for me than anyone. Instead, it was the wonder of exploring what has already been explored.
I guess that's why they have museums, and historic trails and such. People have been there before (or seen the artifacts, dug them up and looked at them without glass walls and crowds of flash photography), and your view of it is hardly new or unique. It's more the significance of each view, and the connection between your actions and the tales told before that is important. I can't really describe it more, but it definitely intrigued me - and much more noticeably to myself than the previous pull had.
Related to that would be the next drive that I noticed. Again, it was based on the connection of my own actions, and the surroundings and all. This time, it boiled down more to the power of this connection, and the ability to interact so powerfully with what had previously been tales and stale video. Boiling it down more, it was the thrill of power.
[picture]Pictured: POWER
This ability to shape my surroundings - the surroundings of the story and information I had been told many times before - was quite fascinating. I noted this at the pictured scene in Teledahn, and also soon after when I took a break to visit the strange Age of Jalak Dador. Here, not only could I manipulate so many things, but I was almost encouraged to be the Age itself.
[picture]Even more power.
I was enjoying the sense of power again in Gahreesen, later, when I was startled by a perfectly mundane thing. With the power just recently restored, I had been running through the corridors in my attempt to find the elevator I had been told about - reveling in the new freedom of the opening doors. Then, suddenly to my view then, a door on the other side of the corridor blinked once and opened.
It was, of course, opening because a friend of mine had been running through the corridors from the other direction. I had invited her to my Age, and I had even known that she was in that vague direction - we had only gotten running off in opposite directions just a little while back - but it still surprised me. I realized at that moment that other people also had such great power and ability to mold the surroundings around them too. This still fascinates me - the interplay between the mundane mysteries of the D'ni, the Ages, and long times of absolutely normal things that happened; the mysteries and influence of the many countless explorers and tales told and acted before me; and the power of individual and contemporary explorers - both myself and others. After Gahreesen, I called back to arrange things for one last time, canceling my vacation trip to Mexico for the much more intriguing pull of the various places here.
That is what drew me here, or at least kept me here. Of course, one last influence to my decision must be covered - the community. Others have waxed poetic about this far longer and in far more detail then I have, so I will just cover this shortly with one brief anecdote.
I had gone and visited the Age of Minkata, the Surveyor's tangle of an Age. After quite some effort putting my advanced mathematical studies to the test with the puzzle of vectors and distances, I chatted with some friends I knew and got help. They had acquired a marker mission where a helpful explorer had outlined carefully the directions to navigate through the trackless sands. I, still being new and without much advances on the calibration of my KI, could not view this mission, but they could (and I could keep track of at least a couple moving landmarks of people, following the - to me invisible - trails).
It was in this way that I "found my path in the stars" - not so much by the careful navigation and direction the Age was originally known for, but by the stars of the distant explorer or explorer who had taken the time and effort to chart the path, and the stars of the friends who ran with me through the desert to highlight this path for me.
[picture or alternate picture](alternate picture tagline: Eh, no good pictures of that, though (too busy running and avoiding the sandstorms) so here's a picture of Negilahn, which is an entirely different place entirely, but with the same general concept.)

Amarhys - Myst-like game

Hello everybody,

This post to present a Myst-like game I am working on for a long time : Amarhys
(sorry for my English, I am French)

A long time ago (7 years) I released a first demo, and after a long break of 5 years and 2 years more to improve the visual aspect and the game engine, Amarhys is back with a new demo.

The demo is available in French and in English, the player can select the language when starting the game.

The main improvments are :
- new graphics rendering, with a 360° environment
- musics and sounds

The game demo is working only under Windows, I'll work later on the Mac version when the final game project is more advanced.

To download the new demo (about 115Mo) :
Download Amarhys demo

For detailed information about installation and for the game demo guide :
Amarhys demo guide

Do not hesitate to contact me on Amarhys website forum if you have any problems, questions or comments about the demo.

Ah yes, I forgot to mention : the goal of this new demo is to get back to the first demo ...

I hope you will enjoy it.
Cheers

Ae'gura Map On DeviantArt
Note: This is still a draft; I haven't quite figured out where the coastline is for the island. Unfinished areas are marked with dark yellow.

This is something that I really wanted to do a long time ago but couldn't find the resources to do. I'd noticed that the Ae'gura map in Myst Online Uru Live was horrendously out of date - to the point of not being accurate in the slightest; the buildings were the wrong shape, or in the wrong place, and so on. I started surveying the Tokotah II and Palace buildings, as they were the most incorrect, and did this by either looking at the layout in game, observing several Fly Mode pics someone had posted online (http://uru.patchallel.com/uru_images_which.htm), and looking at the underside of Ae'gura during a Fun House party. However, the best I could do were sketches that weren't to scale, so I shelved the project.

However, not long ago, a user on Uru (Nevyn) approached me and asked for my help in updating the map (I'd been talking about some of the other maps I'd drawn in my gallery), and sent me a map of the roads of Ae'gura that he'd found on another site (http://home.comcast.net/~mark_af/urumaps.html). I initially said I couldn't do it, but eventually I used the map as a base and drew the Tokotah building layout! Later on I traced over the existing Ae'gura map so there could be a general idea of what the Guild Hall area looks like.

There's a fair bit of speculation on this map, based on concept art and Fly Mode pics of Ae'gura. For instance, a large clay model of Ae'gura that exists at Cyan (http://www.mtn-man.org/images/cyan/DSCN7408.jpg) displays what is clearly Kerathen district on the other side of the rocks that run alongside the Palace and the Library. The placement of the other districts is based on various information from both the books and Uru itself.
The Guild Hall (http://chiso.uruslasthope.com/albums/D'ni/Ae'gura/guildhall-hires.jpg) is accessed via a bridge that leads out of the Palace Tower (above the Hall of Kings) that is presently broken. The bridge also appears to lead to a road that circles a Stalagmite until it reaches the peak (all of this is visible in Uru).

There's more, but this'll have to do for now! Credit to Nevyn, Lowrider, whoever drew the base map, and whoever did the earlier Ae'gura map (which I've come to think was a piece of concept art that ended up being used in game).

Journey Cloths in Moving Environments

I was going through some old posts and found a few that especially caught my interest. I thought expanding on this one about Hand and shell cloths would be fun.

What are your theories on the differences in the behaviors of the cloths in Gahreesen and Ahnonay? The Gahreesen link in the Relto book takes you to the cloth and not (necessarily) the place on the rotating fortress you were standing when you touched it. But the Ahnonay link takes you to the place you were when you touched the cloth and not the cloth itself.

Are all of the Journey cloths and their associated links in the Relto books supposed to behave the same? Are they supposed to act exactly like linking panels in linking books as the Ahnonay link seems to? I would think so but is there any information in journals, speeches by Yeesha, Zandi, etc. that tell you how they work?

Mysterium 2012: Pre-Game

Shorah Folks

Back in August, Eleri Skyped into Mysterium to announce the creation of the Falling Man Group, and that’s the last anyone has heard from us. But don’t worry, we haven’t linked into the middle of a star or anything, and we’ve been busily working on planning Mysterium 2012 in Seattle!

Now, we don’t have news for you today, but we want to let you know that we *will* have news come December 1st. At that time, we will be announcing the dates for Mysterium 2012, our new website, and all manner of other fun things*.

Did we say website? Why yes, you may have noticed that the Mysterium site has been replaced with a boring splash page (and a space to sign up for the mailing list, hint hint). Tanshin has been hard at work making us a new site, and we look forward to its unveiling.

In the meantime, would you be so kind as to fill out a short survey we threw together? The goal is to gather some information about the people who go to (or want to go to) Mysterium so we can help make it exactly what you want. It’s mostly multiple choice and everything is optional, so you may as well just do it... come on, you know you want to.... just click the link...

Oh, and one more thing. After 2012, the FMG is going to be taking a more administrative role, leaving the running of Mysterium largely to local groups. We don’t have all of the specifics ready yet, but you can start thinking about forming a team to run Mysterium in your hometown.

TLDR - Big Mysterium Announcement on December 1st, go to the site to sign up for the mailing list, go to the survey and fill it out, start thinking about Mysterium 2013 proposals.

To the honor of our tubers,
The Falling Man Group

*may not actually include all types of manners or fun. Prohibited where void.

What's the Prison made out of?

I don't have a copy of Riven on me at the moment, so hopefully one of you can answer this:

What's the prison in Jungle Island (the one in the village, where you can Spoilerspoilerspoiler) constructed like? How large is it? Is it made or supported by wood, brick, stone, metal, or what (and if wood - how much of it is wooden? Would it burn down in a fire?)? How close is it to the whark gallows?

While you're satisfying my curiosity about this particular aspect, you can discuss the rest of its interesting construction as well, of course.
