Hm. Before the journals forum existed, somewhere around 2001, I created this journal. I won't claim it is the FIRST, but it was the first one posted on Mystcommunity in text form, with small pencil sketches illustrating it. Over the course of a year I illuminated a real leatherbound Myst journal based on it, took it to Mysterium at Cyan (was that in 2002?) and got it autographed by Rand, RAWA, and various other folks.

Yohshee helped me code the online version on my own website, but even that website is gone. Time to bring it back and give it a place on the new myst community boards (which are old by now, aren't they?) perhaps?

Anyway. Someday I need to try this with a better digital camera, but here's the old photos.

Of course, as I've never seen this remarkable journal, I have but one thing to say...

WHOMBA!

Pardon my impertinence for thinking my re-creation of the journals was anything of significance. I am not simply amazed... I am dumbfounded.

Old news to you and maybe to others, but new news to me.

There simply are not words enough to express my amazement at your "journal".

Yours VERY humbly,
River

wow! not only is the binding, handwriting, and drawing wonderful, but the way that it is written feels very much in place with the Neo-Classical or Victorian feel of the first MYST...

GREAT! Thanks, Sepdet! I haven't seen that journal in quite a while.

I used to tell people about your journal and give them the URL to your site, but then, it disappeared. :mower: It's good to see it posted here, but better to see you here. We miss you very much and wish you would post more often than once or twice every month or three. :)

Oh thank you folks! (gah, i can't even remember D'ni for thank you anymore, it's been so long!)

Note: I didn't make the actual physical "book"; I lurked in various bookstores until I found a blank book that looked like one from the MYST library bookshelf. I'm not that good! But the drawings and writing are mine.

And River-- we each have our own dreams of MYST, and they add to the greater dream. :mower:

That last pic doesn't make it look as if it's the last page. Does the journal continue into Riven?

River, at Mysterium 2005 I saw, and touched, your recreations of the journals in the Myst library. Your skills and dedication are as awesome as your creations! Don't feel humbled: Sepdet is a tough act to follow. She's one of the most talented and intelligent persons I've had the honor to be associated with.

So, River, it's your turn to pen some journals of your adventures in a book we can touch. ;) Just kidding: You spent many more hours developing the ink and paper than you did writing the Journals. Asking you to do that again is a selfish desire of mine. :mower:

Sepdet, again, thanks!! You have made my year! :P

Oh. I put your journal pics in spoiler tags bacause the thread was jumping around as the pics loaded. Even with my 4MBs connection it was hard to read the posts that followed.

:)

Beautiful artwork, beautiful writing. I think it's safe to say that your creativity is what we all aspire to.

Whoops, sorry!

And see, River, there are things you could do I could NEVER in a zillion years do!

As for the Riven section of this story -- "the ending has not yet been written". In other words i always meant to, but haven't.

I see a page has somehow dropped out.

A'ry, thanks for the spoiler tags, i was wondering if that was too many pictures. That's why I'd never posted the finished photos before.: :mower:
