Heya,

in the past several weeks, me and a few others (thank you Capella, amonre, JohnLynch, Shoom'lah, Talashar, Tay, Tweek and whomever I forgot!) have started filling a new wiki with content.

You've probably heard of Wikipedia, so you already know the basics of what a wiki is — it's a website specifically optimized to collect information, making editing (and thus adding, improving or removing) content as easy as possible. We use the same software as Wikipedia, in fact, (MediaWiki) because so many are already familiar with it. Some other sites use it, too; the Star Trek wiki Memory Alpha, for example.

MYSTlore, of course, isn't a general-purpose encyclopedia like Wikipedia, or a Star Trek-related one like Memory Alpha; instead, it focuses on the Myst universe (or "franchise", or "D'niverse", or whichever term you prefer): all the Myst and Uru games, all the novels, and also everything Cyan- or fan-related, be it websites, chatrooms, mailing lists, fan projects, etc. Even tech support gotchas (e.g., the most common problems when running Riven on Windows XP) are welcome. Unlike Wikipedia, the focus is on fictional information, not facts; most pages are "IC", not "OOC". Also, we don't reject dubious information, although we do strongly request that someone else jumps in to try and back it up, but if not possible, what's the harm in a little bit of speculation? We encourage trivia — as long as it's remotely related to Myst, Cyan or D'ni — , and thus far are lenient in what's on-topic and what's not. Naturally, there are some limits; don't post something NDA-related, and don't post something about flora and fauna on the moon. But we'll avoid enforcing those as much as we can, in order to keep the spirit as open and liberal as possible.

Like with Wikipedia, a user account is recommended, but not required. For now, you can create and edit articles as a guest. We hope restricting this won't be necessary.

We realize this similar in concept to the Archive at DPWR, or to Kehrin's D'ni Desk Reference, and those both are excellent. But we do believe that the community is large enough for a new site, with its own unique benefits and disadvantages. That said, please don't merely copy and paste information from them (or from Wikipedia's Myst universe-related articles, for that matter) — really, that's evil, makes you look bad, and could get even us admins into legal trouble. Whatever you contribute, be sure it's original and "legal".

So I hope this gives everyone a general idea of… the idea.

One more thing: obviously, MYSTlore is a "sister site" to MYSTcommunity, sharing some of the admins, running on the same server, etc. But the two do not share accounts, which on the one hand means that if you're already an MC member, you need to register again for ML; on the other hand, it also means you don't have to sign up for both if you like one or the other. I.e., they're both websites in their own right.

Content-wise, we're nowhere near "done". That would be a fairly dull wiki, wouldn't it? :braces: Some articles are incomplete, some are missing altogether, and some aren't written in greatest style or more comprehensive manner — but thanks to the wiki nature of the site, you can easily keep contributing and improving, for everyone else.

So, go ahead and browse!

P.S.: as a little bonus, as of a few weeks ago, MC features two new tags, "wikipedia" and "mystlore". You can easily link to articles from the two, like this (without spaces): [ wikipedia]Beetle[/ wikipedia], or [ mystlore]Yeesha[/ mystlore]!

I added a bit to the "Islands in Riven" Page, so now we have a small overview.

We have NOTHING on Narayan or Saavedro?

Oh, Anna Catherine? Would you kindly come in here and add some info, please?

Yeah, some areas are embarrassingly lacking. But it's in a rather early stage of development, with only a handful of people having contributed, so… :braces:

It's just getting started. :blinky:

There is definitely missing pages and pages that need more content.

I know. Maybe I should camoflage myself as Saavedro and lure innocent Narayani Collective members to MystLore and MAKE them write an article. :blinky: :braces:

Or, i could just ask them nicely. Yeah, let's go with that.

What are the limitations on using Cyan intellectual property (images from games, etc.)? I'm thinking of starting a Choru section, and possibly uploading lots of graphics, but I'm unclear on how to read their guidelines in the context of a project like this:

Quote

Maximum asset usage per domain for Ages less than 1 year from release

* 3 full size images from each age (larger than a thumbnail)
* 10 thumbnail images from each age (typically 100 x 100 pixels)
* 10 seconds of sound from each age
* 50 words of journal text from each age

Maximum asset usage per domain for Ages more than 1 year from release

* 15 full size images from each age (larger than a thumbnail)
* 25 thumbnail images from each age (typically 100 x 100 pixels)
* 30 seconds of sound from each age
* 200 words of journal text from each age

Well, ultimately, only Tony (or whoever does legal now) can answer that.

It's not my call to make; assuming they're very strict about enforcing those quoted limitations, I'd find that quite counter-productive — sure, to protect against third parties copying off their work is one thing, but fans using it in order to collect and archive information and provide it to other fans? You'd think Cyan would be happy to encourage that.

Oh cool. May I ask, is it okay to take content from Wikipedias Myst related articles and add?

Heh, that's a bit of a complicated subject matter, but in a nutshell, no, you can't — with a number of exceptions. I shall make a FAQ about it.

I hope this helps answer your question to an extent: MYSTlore:Acquiring_content.

That, regrettably, I don't know. So... I can't add it!

What? There's no page on squees? Man, I've just about had enough with this! How do you make a new page?

Just go to the page. http://mystlore.com/wiki/Squee ... if it doesn't exist, it will take you to where you can edit it.

I've been filling in the animals this evening, but I purposely left the squees alone since I knew there were fans with a real passion for them.

Someone needs to fix the page on bahro.

Quote

Bahro

The Bahro are a species that served the D'ni. They were enslaved, and stuff.

They're really cute and make adorable noises.

Bahros Like:
Hiding
Yeesha
Bahros Don't Like:
Snakes
Negative People

Feel free. It… was a joke of Moiety's, as I understand it. Certainly needs a lot of work.

Oh, I will. I will. Cute joke, though, Moiety.

EDIT: Added a picture to the Squee page. I don't know how to embed images, though, so it's just a link to a 'blank image'. If you click on the empty square, the image will pop up.

RE-EDIT: Whoever fixed the Squee image, thank you. Re-edited the Bahro page; it should now be much more informative. Has some non-existant links in it, though. And it needs a picture. I mean, a good clear picture.

And who was working on the Bahro page while I was working on it? I tried to save, and the Wiki told me that it was being worked on by someone else while I was working on it. ???

Does the Wiki let you merge your changes? It's a pain, but better than ditching all your hard work...

I did. I also created MYSTlore:Images as a simple guide on how to do work with images.

Well, Shoom'lah took care of the image. It's hard to do a great one of a Bahro, though.

According to the history, Shoom'lah and I were.

Just want to bump this; a few of us have been working a bit on the wiki (I'm the anonymous guy btw), but more people would be great! Even if you just go there and expand a little on one article, it's great.

Added image to the Narayan page, which was curiously lacking one...

Also, the Lesson Ages page has Edanna, Voltaic, Amateria, and Narayan. Should J'nanin also be included? Or would it go under Nexus Ages?
