I've always wondered about the ending where you help Saavedro return to his home, but lose Releeshahn because he decides to be a jerk in the last moment. The game goes out of its way to make the player pity Saavedro as a victim. But then, when he has what he wanted, and should supposedly be grateful, he throws away that linking book just for spite or lulz. On my first play-through, I certainly didn't anticipate it - making Myst III the first game where I got a losing end unintentionally.

Did any of you get suckered by Saavedro's pitiful victim act the first time, or did all of you immediately know to trust him no further than you could throw him (or, as it were, than he could throw a linking book)?

Yeah, i got tricked.
Well, i wasn't exactly surprised that he did it. Twenty years alone, under the assumptions he kept, will make you hate the one you blame with quite a passion. So it was indeed out of spite {although seeing Saavy's extremely lolcatty face, one is tempted to assume it was for the lulz}.
So i saved just before i let him go, believing there's a 50% chance he'll cross me. Then i reloaded, and after some tinkering, did it right. Only then did i reload again, to try dieing by the gondola, dieing on the roof, leaving Saavy trapped, and going to Tomahna without solving anything at all {in no particular order}.

I got tricked too. :kthnxbye: Saavedro is very persuasive.
Then I got spoilerized.

It took me a couple of years before I could attempt the other endings.

It wasn't til I read stuff here that I found out you could send him home. I had always left him trapped there. :kthnxbye:

Arancaytar, please do not use the 'p' word (i.e, 'he decides to be a jerk at the last moment'). It's considered inappropriate here. If you would please edit it out of your post and replace it with something else... :kthnxbye: :blurp:

Also, welcome to Mystcommunity! :tomato: :rotflol: <---- traditional greeting

I admittedly did. Exile was the first game that I lost because of that. Then I tried to help him, but I forgot to switch the lever and he ran in and killed me, then I left him there and was sad, then I got the right ending. XD

I think it's because he knows that you feel sorry for him... and he's using that against you. :rotflol:

I just did it because I thought he'd kill me if I hesitated. :kthnxbye:

Oh yeah, that too. I heard that if you waited, he'd kill you... and I didn't realize that was only for one ending. XD

Yeah, my dad made me go get something right after Saavedro told me to switch the lever, and I started freaking out cuz I thought he (Saavy) would kill me, and it sat there for 10 minutes with no death. :kthnxbye:

Am I the only one who was not tricked? He was insane! I didn't think twice about trapping him! But after I trapped him I felt bad because of the "No,no,no!" thing and let him go. :kthnxbye:

... it was a fear thing. I was scared he'd run out and :kthnxbye: me if I wasn't careful. Like I said, I didn't know that was only part of one ending.

I got tricked the first time as well. I felt bad for Saavedro, and let that feeling cloud my judgement a little. I reloaded and managed to figure out the good ending, then experimented with leaving him trapped.

I used to play the Myst games with my mother (until I moved away to college and Spire confused her.) But we played up to Exile together. And I have to say this:

SHE AND I PLAYED EVERY SINGLE BAD ENDING UNTIL WE FINALLY CLUED THE HECK IN!!!

It wasn't because we got tricked by his puppy dog act, it was more of a 'well...what else can we do?' thing. I personally didn't want to trust him (of the two of us, I wanted to touch the forbidden green book too and she didn't listen to me then either.) but the first time we played Exile's ending, he tossed the Book over the side.

Her next guess was to go out and 'ask nicely'. Hm...no. That failed too.

THEN she wanted to Link to Tomahna to get Atrus. My reaction was this: "MUM! YOU CAN'T! HE'LL KILL ATRUS AND I STILL HAVEN'T FORGIVEN DAD FOR PLAYING THE RIVEN BAD ENDING ON PURPOSE WITH ME!!!" Yeah, she didn't listen then either.

So finally we're going "AH! AH! WHAT DO WE--power?" and me, I did it, clued in and figured out how to trap him. His no's did sway me and I let him go which prompt me to cry my eyes out the first (okay, every time) I've played. I've never left him trapped, I just couldn't do it - I know they're just games and all but I thought it would make me no better than the boys who did it to him in the first place.

Maybe that's just me.

Hm, checking the dictionary indeed revealed it as a genital slang rather than a harmless pejorative for "annoying person". I'm an ESL speaker and was used to people using that word without reservation. Thanks for clearing this up. :D

I didn't get tricked by Saav's pitiful "no"ing (though it did make me cry). By this point in the Myst series, I was like, "If Atrus doesn't say it himself, don't believe it" XD

It helps XD

I got tricked. Then the next time, I forgot to block him out when I went back to Tomahna, and you know what happens then. :arianna:

Yeah, some help to Atrus I was, lol.

Just finished the game. I never trusted Saavedro, but I fell prey to the "wait him out" death where he loses patience and tosses the book when you won't throw the switch. I knew there was no way I was letting him go with the book... guess I hoped he would crack and offer to give me the book first. Guess we all know how that turned out. Reloaded, left him stranded, felt pretty good about myself.

I was surprised to read about so many people feeling sorry for him. To me, he just came across as stone crazy. I weep for that poor city-tree-blimp-thing at the end of the track in the "good" ending.... he probably jumps off that gondola and goes right into a murderous kill-spree.

Now Gehn I liked. If there had been a "trust Gehn" bad ending, I probably would have lost to it. Good thing Atrus didn't trust me with a Linking Book last game.

:D :D yeah. Gehn was the easiest decision for me (except maybe for Revelation's predictable ending), since you are told multiple times since the beginning of the game. When he says "but I have changed" I do feel momentarily trusting, but then he quickly loses his bid with "My mission was an honorable one."
