Myst was just released for iPhone/iPod touch, so for those of you who purchase it (or don't want to/can't), feel free to share your thoughts. I purchased it, and overall, it's wonderful, although there are just a few minor issues. I'll go into detail once Apple approves my review and I can copy and paste it here. =P

Also, Cyan has a simple webpage to accompany Myst for iPhone. On this page, there are a few goodies, including hi-res images of certain Myst scenes: http://cyanworlds.co...ion/Images.html

I've never seen these images before. Have they previously been available?

yes, they've been circulating the web. I downloaded them in early 2003. There's even another one which shows Myst Island by night :cheesy:

I've played just a few minutes and the game looks great - brings back fond memories... although I sense that a few things might be missing... has anyone seen the butterflies while walking towards the clock tower? I've just started the game again to double check and nope, seems they are missing :D what else changed?

This seems to be a huge success! Despite very very hard competetion in the app store, Myst is among the "Top Paid Apps" for games after only a few days! Wow!

Downloading it right now! Go Cyan!

Jason Baskett I think? Though I can't imagine that image is actually related to Myst. Uru or EoA is more likely.

I downloaded Myst and installed it on my iPod this afternoon. I'm looking forward to playing through it again. (It's probably been over a decade since I've really sat down and played through classic MYST completely. I still remember most of it, but it's neat to see all of it again and be reminded of some of the details that I've forgotten.)

It's really mind-boggling that it's now possible to run MYST on a device that quite comfortably fits in my pocket and the palm of my hand, yet completely blows away the Quadra 700 that I originally played the game on years ago. Even the 480x320 pixel resolution of the iPhone/iPod touch isn't that far off from the 512x384 pixel resolution of the original MYST.

Myst has been on the top 100 most downloaded paid apps, all categories, for 2 days, and is now number 9. It has some great reviews too, averaging at 4.5 (it was a straight 5 yesterday).

GamesRadar.com included Myst in it's list of 33 iPhone Games for REAL Gamers.

"The app? Myst

Based on? One of the best-selling games of all time, this famous 1993 graphic adventure traded story for mystery, inventory items for logic puzzles and clear context for an organic sense of discovery.

Worth the download? Definitely. What felt dated by modern PC standards – the static screens, repetitive sound effects, cheesy video and limited movement – now seems perfectly streamlined for on-the-go iPhone gaming. Let’s hope this is just the beginning of a portable point-and-click resurgence. ($6)"

Seems that I'm not the only one hoping for Riven, which happens to be my favorite MYST game.

I certainly hope so. A Myst Renaissance could start great things.

Not exactly. Unless it's the singing version, in which case go right ahead.

I finally got around to buying the app and I must say it is really neat. The positive more than overwhelms the negative points, but the few things that bothered me is that some of the animations were dumbed down or replaced with crossfades, and the linking panels aren't animated, other than that having Myst on my iPod touch is absolutely amazing.

EDIT: I forgot to metion the one other thing that bothers me: the inclusion of Apple style animations to make things more easlily readable; I understand completely why they're there but I feel they break the immersion and I wish there was a way to turn them off.

8.5/10

Original myst uses this a lot too, just fyi. Is there any particular animation you think of?

Well it's been ages since I've played the original Myst on a computer just because I don't have the means so correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember things like the pannel that covers the controls for the imager having an actual animation instead of a crossfade as it does in the iPhone/iPod Touch version.

Unfortunately, this was done for technical reasons. The two biggest limitations are that movies can only be played full-screen, and that movies don't have interactive hotspots. So all movies — many of which were previously embedded — had to be converted to be fullscreen (which obviously increased their size significantly), and some had to be cut entirely. For example, the butterfly animations on Myst Island are now impossible because you wouldn't be able to move around while they're playing. Similarly, the fly-bys can't loop any more because you have to be able to actually link in. Another problem beyond Cyan's control is the loading animation before playing any movie.

My hope is that a future iPhone SDK will improve the movie player. It clearly was designed for stand-alone playback, not with a game like Myst in mind.
