What happens when you come back to the temple island from jungle island for the first time and the temple door is closed?

If you can answer that question, you can answer your question.

edit: :arianna: <- because you're new.

Not everything in Riven is a puzzle. For example, in the temple, there's not really much for the player to do. It's just to show backstory to the game.

Now think about the chair-cage apparatus as a whole. It might not unlock anything, so what other purpose could it have served? Take note of the way it looks when you're sitting in it with the cage closed.

Also, don't just look to the visuals. Riven has great sound effects.

It's part of the chair's purpose, which you might not be able to tell just yet (being just one person - the purpose of the handle might only be apparent to those who are somewhere else).

While not every detail is super important in puzzles, they all have a purpose in the world of Riven. You might notice that the chair's design closely fits something else nearby, which might help you understand what it is there for.

The chair is closely connected to the imager display in the temple. Whatever, or should I say, whoever is on the chair can broadcast themselves into the imager. You can sometimes manage to see this demonstrated if you return by tram to Temple Island. The fact that such a thing is there helps you understand the world and people in it a little more.

The cage looks like the one in the temple, and you see Gehn's face projected in the temple at one point, so I'm guessing the chair is basically a projector for Gehn to use when ordering his worshippers around.
