PROLOGUE

Kari, a practical, attractive woman in her early twenties,
carries a pile of towels down the hall, stopping to knock on
the bathroom door. from inside we hear the water running and
snatches of singing.

KARI
Krystal? Is that you?

KRYSTAL
(OS)
Yes!

KARI
You just took a shower this
morning!

KRYSTAL
(OS)
I had a letter from Atrus. It seems
to be rather urgent.

KARI
Well, that’s nice, but it doesn’t
explain why you’re taking another
shower.

KRYSTAL
(OS)
Are you kidding? Atrus needs my
help! There’s no telling when I’ll
be able to shower again. The last
time Atrus needed my help I was
stuck in J’nanin for a solid week
with no way home; and he never
followed me!

KARI
You mean, he abandoned you?

KRYSTAL
(OS)
Well, I guess he was pretty busy
with the fire Saavedro started, but
I didn’t know that till I got back.

KARI
Oh.
(A pause)
Will you be leaving right away?

KRYSTAL
(OS)
Yeah.
(The water stops)
It sounds pretty important. He said
it had something to do with his
sons.

KARI
Sirrus and Achenar? I thought they
were dead!

KRYSTAL
(OS)
SO did I.

The door opens and Krystal emerges in a bathrobe, drying her
hair with a towel.

KRYSTAL
Apparently the red and blue books
were not trap books like Atrus
wrote for Gehn, but linking books
to prison ages, like the D’Ni
wrote.

KARI
I’d hate to have to meddle with
them. From what you’ve told me,
they’re awful characters.

KRYSTAL
I know. I’ll be careful. I hope my
travel clothes are clean.

She walks down the hall. Kari stares after her uncertainly.

KARI
When will you be back?

KRYSTAL
(OS)
I don’t know!

KARI
What do I tell people?

KRYSTAL
(OS)
Make somthing up!

Kari stares for a minute, then shrugs and put the towels
away.

CUT To- Krystal’s room. She is dressed in heavy white and
brown clothing, including a leather pouch and a long cloak.
She pulls a book out of a chest, closes the lid and lays the
book on top. She opens the cover, smooths the pages
reverently, lays her hand on the gateway image, and
vanishes.

SCENE ONE - TOMAHNA

That's all I've got so far. I have to reinstall and replay the game to get all the dialog right, and I still haven't figured out the exact sequence of events. The dream is, of course, to film myself as Krystal, on a greenscreen, and extract all the backgrounds I need from the game and actually put it together as though it really happened. It's daring, it will probably never happen, but the places seem so real I like to actually make them so. The downside is, of course, that they give away the plot points of the game... spoilers to follow. This of course, is the sequel. The first movie I want to make will be about Myst and Riven, and introduce the out-game characters, and so forth, but me, being the crazy kid I am, am writing everything in reverse. :blinky:

I like it so far. Filming this would be a very ambitious project. :blinky:

Spoiler Alert! If you have not played Revelation and do not wish to have every scrap of dialog and action revealed to you, do not read the following!!!

SCENE ONE - TOMAHNA

Yeesha and Krystal are in the Maglev, riding towards
Tomahna. Yeesha is talking animatedly, Krystal smiles and
nods and makes an occasional comment. The Maglev comes to a
stop at the entrance to Atrus’ workshop.

YEESHA
I’ll tell dad you’re here. Come on!

KRYSTAL
I’m coming!

She opens the door and follows Yeesha in. Atrus emerges from
the elevator as she reaches his desk.

KRYSTAL
Atrus!

ATRUS
Hello, my friend. I see you made it
in one piece, so Yeesha’s driving
wasn’t too radical.

KRYSTAL
Oh no, it was fun!

ATRUS
I suppose you’re wondering why I
asked you to come.

KRYSTAL
Well, actually...

ATRUS
Well, the truth is, I need your
help.

KRYSTAL
Obviously.

ATRUS
As you know, my sons, Sirrus and
Achenar were trapped, twenty years
ago after destroying several ages I
wrote. At the time Catherine and I
decided to leave them imprisoned,
we hoped it might reform them. Now
Catherine believes out sons should
be released. But I need an
objective opinion. I need to find
out if either Sirrus or Achenar
deserve to be freed. You’re the
only one we can trust.

KRYSTAL
(softly)
I’ll do my best.

ATRUS
(after an awkward pause)
You know my old crystal viewer?
I’ve made some changes to it. I
need to calibrate the sound
component on it. I can show you the
two prison ages before we link to
them. Ah, got it. We should be able
to hear both prison ages now.

A minor explosion

ATRUS
What in the Maker’s name...

More explosions

KRYSTAL
What is going on?

ATRUS
(groans)
What a mess. The image modulator
short circuited, the wires are
completely fused...

KRYSTAL
Can you fix it?

ATRUST
The viewer itself seems okay. So
maybe, if I link to Rime...

KRYSTAL
Well, what now?

ATRUS
All right, my friend, slight change
of plans. The explosion must have
shut down the main power supply and
dameged the veiwers external
modulater. there’s another one on
Rime, so I’m going to link there
and retrieve it. Oh, I’ll have to
stop at the cleft and get some
tools first.

KRYSTAL
Is there anything I can do?

ATRUST
Uh, why don’t you get full power
restored while I’m gone?

KRYSTAL
Any directions on that?

ATRUS
Go to the waterwheel control room.
Close both release gages then come
back here and use the crystal
veiwer to contact me. The crytsal
combination to see Rime is in my
journal.

KRYSTAL
Okay.

ATRUS
Oh, ah, you have to turn on the
roof antenna before the veiwer will
work.

KRYSTAL
All right.

ATRUS
Keep an eye on Yeesha, will you?

KRYSTAL
I will.

ATRUS
I’ll be back.

KRYSTAL
See you.

Atrus leaves. Krystal sighs.

KRYSTAL
Always something going wrong around
here, isn’t there, Atrus?

She pokes around in his desk until she finds the journal.

KRYSTAL
It’s a good thing you don’t mind me
messing with your private journals,
my friend. There’s very little
about you and your family that I
don’t know.

She laughs as she reads.

KRYSTAL
There’s nothing you can build that
I can’t figure out, Atrus. Now
then, about that power supply...

SCENE TWO - YEESHA

As Krystal emerges from the elevator she sees Yeesha ahead.
She walks to the first round building and Yeesha calls to
her.

YEESHA
Hey, come here, you’ve got to see
this.

They stare together at the lizard until he crawls away.

KRYSTAL
Aw, he’s gone.

YEESHA
Don’t worry, he’ll come back. It’s
his favorite sleeping spot.

KRYSTAL
How do you know that?

YEESHA
My necklace showed it to me.

KRYSTAL
That’s a nice necklace. Where did
you get it?

YEESHA
I got it two weeks ago on an age
called Serenia. It shows me all
sorts of stuff. Do you think it’s
strange that my necklace shows me
stuff?

KRYSTAL
No, not really.

YEESHA
Dad does. He says that all the
stuff I see on Serenia isn’t real.
My brother’s believe me though.

KRYSTAL
That’s nice, Yeesha.

Yeesha wanders off and Krystal walks down to the water
wheel.

KRYSTAL
(she laughs softly)
There’s nothing you can break that
I can’t fix Atrus.

CUT TO- The green house room.

KRYSTAL
Hey, Yeesha, I--

YEESHA
Let me guess, Dad blew the power
again, didn’t he?

KRYSTAL
Yes, he did.

YEESHA
He does that a lot. Mom made him
install an extra power box in here
just in case.

KRYSTAL
Is it all right?

YEESHA
Oh no!

KRYSTAL
Figures.

YEESHA
There aren’t enough rows lit up
correctly. Only a green light on
top of a filled row means
something’s getting power. I wonder
if I can move them.

Krystal watches. Yeesha closes the box.

YEESHA
Better not. Mom doesn’t like me
messing with electrical stuff.

She walks across the room.

YEESHA
Come on, little guy, let’s go see
our friends. Hey! I never noticed
that before.

KRYSTAL
(follows her)
What is it?

YEESHA
It’s so cool. It seems my beetles
are making a nest. Oh wow. I’ll
have to show this to Dad as soon as
he gets home. He loves this kind of
stuff.

KRYSTAL
I’d better get to work on the power
supply.

Yeesha leaves and Krystal works over the box for a minute.

KRYSTAL
There, that should do it.

She looks around.

KRYSTAL
Where’d Yeesha go?

In the distance there’s the faint sound of a flute. Krystal
follows it.

KRYSTAL
Yeesha? Are you down here?

YEESHA
Can’t talk right now. I’m trying to
remember this song I heard on
Serenia but it’s really hard.

KRYSTAL
You sound good to me.

YEESHA
I’ve got to get it perfect because
I promised to play it for my
brother next time I see him.

KRYSTAL
That’s really nice, Yeesha.

A pause.

KRYSTAL
Well, carry on! I should have the
power back soon, Yeesha.

Back at the Water Wheel Krystal watches in satisfaction as
the wheel turns again.

KRYSTAL
That’s should do it I think. Now,
to get a hold of Atrus.

She starts up the path and sees Yeesha ahead.

KRYSTAL
Hey, Yeesha, I think I fixed it. Is
everything--

She is cut off by the sudden trembling of the walk way. A
high pitched whine is heard, the bridge begins to collapse,
and everything goes black.

Scenes One and Two. The most difficult part is, of course, making everybody's long winded monologues become intelligent dialog. The most difficult part ahead of me is the fact that Krystal will be all by herself, talking to herself, so I'm kind of trying to set a precedent for talking aloud to herself. :blinky:

Lostthyme, I'm glad you like it. Filming it is an ambitious project, but sometimes I have ambitious dreams. I haven't started it yet though, for obvious reason. *laughs* I'd like to though. Maybe I can find some people on here who are interested in helping, or forcing me to do it. It is nice to know there are other people as crazy about the Myst world as I am.

Just know I'm here cheering you on. :P

And I get the feeling that Krystal is just humoring Yeesha half of the time. The kid's a bit weird. Must run in the family. :blinky:

SCENE THREE - DARKNESS

Night has fallen. Zoom in slowly on Krystal, lying
unconscious under the walkway. Slowly she opens her eyes and
stumbles to her feet. The world goes blurry for a minute as
she pulls herself up to the greenhouse room.

KRYSTAL
(weakly)
Atrus? Catherine?

She leans against the wall, disoriented, her dress dripping
on the floor.
KRYSTAL
What happened? (A pause) Where’s
Yeesha?

CUT TO- The kitchen. Krystal is coming around to her normal
self and she wears a worried expression as she swings the
bridge around to Yeesha’s room and crosses over.

KRYSTAL
Yeesha?

A quick glance at her room reveals it empty. Krystal
suddenly turns in panic and runs back up the walkway.

CUT TO - Atrus’ Study. Krystal works frantically over the
controls until connection is made with Rime.

KRYSTAL
Atrus? Something terrible has
happened.

ATRUS
Ah, my friend, are you there? I
hope you’re getting something. I’m
hardly receiving you.

KRYSTAL
Atrus...

CUT TO - The viewer at Rime. Krystal can be seen vaugly,
talking, but the static cuts out her voice. Back -

ATRUS
There’s a terrible electro-magnetic
storm here, I can’t leave Rime
until it’s over. I know what you
can do. There’s a desk in my
bedroom, on the top drawer is a
symbol. Press on it to open two
compartments. The commentaries I
wrote on Haven and Spire are
inside.

KRYSTAL
Atrus! Can you hear me!

ATRUS
Oh, and tell Yeesha to do her
homework.

KRYSTAL
Yeesha is missing! I can’t find her
anywhere! She’s not in her room,
she’s not in the house...

She trails off as the viewer turns back to static.

CUT TO - Atrus’ bedroom. Krystal sits at his desk and opens
the compartments.

KRYSTAL
Commentaries. Who cares?

She rifles through the papers and finds a diagram for the
fireplace. Curious she steps over to it, looking up breifly
at the picture before stepping inside. Yeesha’s necklace is
lying on the floor.

KRYSTAL
Oh no... Yeesha...

She barely picks it up, horror on her face, when the memory
washes over her. Yeesha running, running in terror to the
fireplace, and a hand reaches in and tears at the necklace.
Krystal puts the necklace around her own neck and takes the
elevator down to the linking chamber.

KRYSTAL
Spire or Haven? Sirrus or Achenar?
Which one has her?

She hesitates briefly, then links to Spire.

SCENE FOUR - SPIRE

The linking chamber on Spire. The middle barrier is
destroyed. Krystal looks around, confused and disturbed at
what she sees. She looks down at the D’Ni book, her hand on
Yeesha’s necklace. Then she turns and walks quickly down the
stairs. Turn and comes down more stairs, calling Yeesha as
she goes. She comes to the first elevator.

KRYSTAL
Dang. Doesn’t work. Well, what did
I expect?

She continues down the stairs and comes suddenly on the
sculpture.

KRYSTAL
This matches the painting over the
fireplace. (A pause, then softly)
Sirrus misses home.

She turns aside and trips over the remains of Sirrus fire.
Clutching the necklace she sees another memory.

SIRRUS
I thought I was the only devious
one in our family. But this- this
is classic. No book father, no
linking book-- OH! Think Sirrus.
Think.

KRYSTAL
(awestruck and horrified)
What is this thing??

She continues down the cavern until she comes to the garden.

KRYSTAL
(as she comes into the room)
Yeesha? Yeesha are you...

She trails off as she looks around. The garden, the statue
with the flower from Tomohna. The Chess set, the memories,
Sirrus’ bed of stone.

KRYSTAL
Sirrus, is this how you lived for
twenty years? (a thought) And where
is he now, anyway? He obviously
didn’t stay here. Somehow he...
escaped. And Yeesha, he wouldn’t
take her back to his own age. They
must be in Haven.

She turns and starts to run back.

KRYSTAL
The time I’ve wasted here...

SCENE FIVE - HAVEN

Linking in. Memory of Yeesha running, then of the dome
crumbling. Krystal stands in the ruins looking around.

KRYSTAL
She is here. She has to still be
here!

She runs toward the boat. She trips and falls, overturning a
stone. Underneath it is a crystal. We see the memory of the
fight superimposed on Krystal as she comes to the elevator
and kicks the wooden balls around anxiously. Krystal reaches
the ship and begins exploring it thoroughly, room by room,
calling for Yeesha, until she finds Achenar’s journal.

ACHENAR
(VO)
I cannot believe I resisted linking
here for so long. Father’s warning
kept me away - he said Haven was an
Age of great wealth, but visiting
it would be dangerous without him.
Lying serpent. Should have known he
would say anything to keep Sirrus
and me under his control. I despise
him! But look, father. Look who’s
under whose control now?!

Krystal slowly sets the book down and leaves the ship. She
starts up the other path, making her way past all the
rubble. Achenar’s voice continues.

ACHENAR
(VO)
Man, is it hot!! Actually starting
to like these infernal
thunderstorms. They ruin a good day
of hunting, but at least they cool
things down for a while. Surprised
my greedy brother hasn’t shown up
yet. He’s got to know I skipped out
on him in Serenia, after we called
that little truce. He’s insane if
he thinks his plan there will work.
We should just kill father and be
done with it. Then again, maybe I
should link back to Myst and
convince Sirrus to set the old man
free here in Haven. After all these
weeks of practice, my hunting and
tracking skills have really
improved.

Suddenly she comes into a room with some kind of painting
and... an animal darts out from behind something and she is
caught in a trap.

POV Krystal as she is carried above the jungle and finally
dropped. She sits up, confused and looks around.

ACHENAR
(VO)
Been slashing through the jungle
all week and have yet to run into
any people. What did you do,
Father? Get them to turn this
island into some kind of wild
animal park? It would be just like
you to convince the stupid idiots
to do that. Have to hand it to you
though. The heads on some of these
beasts will look really good on my
walls.

Krystal gets up and starts down the path.

KRYSTAL
She’s got to be here somewhere.
She’s got to! Unless they got away
somehow, whoever they are. Sirrus
and Achenar can’t be working
together, or they wouldn’t have
been fighting. One of them has
captured Yeesha and the other one
tried to save her, and my vote for
the good one right now is Sirrus.
(She laughs) but then why did
Yeesha come here? Maybe...

YEESHA
(VO)
We visited my brother today. He had
a gift for me but Dad made me go
home before I could see it. I felt
so bad. Dad talked to me later and
said it was just bones so I
shouldn’t be scared. I wasn’t
’cause I don’t think Achenar meant
to be bad. He looked so sad when we
left.

Krystal comes to the grassy area and walks toward the sea.
Too late she turns and see the beastie that tried to eat us
following her. Predictably, he’s going to try to eat her.

KRYSTAL
Oh no.

She backs up slowly, trying to get away from the advancing
predator. The beatie brushes against some odd looking
plants. Krystal looses her balance and falls. When she
regains her feet the beastie is also down, lying there
moaning. Not waiting to see if he’ll recover she steps
around him and returns to the jungle. Soon enough she comes
to the Lake house.

KRYSTAL
Locked. Figures.

She looks closely at the symbols on the lock.
KRYSTAL
Where have I seen these before?

TOTEM POLE MONTAGE

Krystal scrambles over the rocks down to the skeleton by the
water.

ACHENAR
(VO)
MY GOD! THE SIZE!
IMPOSSIBLE!! Hands still shaking.
Didn’t expect attack. Didn’t
realize... MAGNIFICENT!! STILL see
him rearing out of sea. Water
spilling down gills. Such MALICE!
Such DEATH in his eyes! Sun sinking
behind. Reflections so bright,
nearly blinded. Must’ve planned it
that way. Must’ve KNOWN.

She leans against a rock, copying the symbol off the totem
pole.

ACHENAR
(VO)
Intelligence. Premeditation.
Stealth. Patience. I can’t forget
his patience.

Krystal puts the notebook away and moves on.

ACHENAR
(VO as she leaves)
But I’m alive, sea spawn. STILL
ALIVE!!! And I will defeat you. As
DEATH is my witness, I SHALL
DECORATE MY KINGDOM WITH YOUR
BONES!!!

Climbing up into the hut she sits on a crate, munching some
kind of Havenish fruit, writing while watching the monkey
things.

ACHENAR
(VO)
Got my first taste of primate
today. I was cutting a path through
the jungle when one of the stupid
buggers clonked me from behind with
a piece of fruit! Scared the hell
out of me. I whipped around, ready
to slice-n-dice, but it let out
this ear-piercing shriek. Must have
been a signal to it’s buddies,
’cause they all took off into their
nests. Too bad Mister Shrieker
wasn’t fast enough.

She pulls down the chart and looks at it.

ACHENAR
(VO)
That’s it, that’s it, you know you
want the food, come on little guy,
That’s it!

She throws the rest of the fruit to the monkeys, rolls up
the chart and climbs down.

Krystal stands at the gate and looks contemplatively at the
lock.

ACHENAR
Hear this? You hear it? Well, jsut
try to get past this gate now, you
theiving Karnaks?

She fumbles with the lock and the gate goes up. Inside She
sits on the rock, contemplates the house, and writes again.

ACHENAR
(VO)
It was a very successful day today.
Mostly karnaks. Figuring out how to
use their fishing habits against
them then was sheer genius.

Krystal sits in the swamp area, beside the sea.

ACHENAR
Gracious. Humble. Cautious. Stupid.
Stupidity can be a virtue, can’t
it?

Back in the grass. Krystal hesitates visibly before walking
back through.

ACHENAR
(VO)
Though I can tell you, my friend,
makes you sick! Spew your guts out.
I know. So let’s see what happens
when you get a high caloric dose of
it from the tip of my spear! Haha!
KRYSTAL
(mutters)
Achenar, will you shut up? Hearing
you is almost more nauseating.

She finds the totem pole and copies the design carefully.

ACHENAR
(VO)
Last one. You can do this...
Strength. Dexterity. Courage.

KRYSTAL
(softly)
This is not the Achenar I know.

She stands up and brushes off her skirt.

KRYSTAL
You’ve change, haven’t you...
brother?

@ Allatwan, Thank you. I thought it would be really cool when I started playing the game, but I couldn't finish the script until I finished the game and I've been putting it off until now...

On that note, the pattern of Krystal's thoughts is closely based on what I actually did. I am taking a little bit of artistic license with the order in which things happen. For instance, I think Achenar links to Serenia immediately after you return from Spire, but I'm not going to have him do it until she gets back from Haven, simply so that there's less running back and forth, back and forth...

Also, I apologize for the vague animal references. I never did learn there names, I cannot spell them, and I cannot say them. The stupid thing that lives in the swamp my sister and I simply referred to as the 'Naked Beastie.' and we had to touch it. I hated that. If anyone knows of any other memories associated with the animals that I have forgotten, can't find, etc, let me know. Achenar's voice overs are from his first journal and from memories. I combined them with the action to keep it moving faster.

SCENE SIX - ACHENAR

Krystal opens the gate and walks up to the house. Inside she
looks around, finally picking up his journal.

ACHENAR
(VO)
Not sure I can do this. Pen feels
awkward. Keeps slipping. Been so
long since I used one. But what
else is there? What else to do?
Went back to wreck today. First
time since moving into house. Found
His bones exactly where I left ’em.
Except clean now. Bleached white by
the sea.

Krystal sits on the steps of the Lake house, reading
Achenar’s journal.

ACHENAR
(VO)
How many times have I replayed it
since then?

Flashback of the water against the bones of the monster.
Maybe one of Achenar’s drawings.

ACHENAR
(VO)
Sun sinking into the waves. Tip of
my spear gleaming wet with the
poison. See myself crouching low
near the rocks. So SURE He will
come. Because of His mate.
Sometimes -- in my head -- it
happens different. Poison gets
diluted. Or one of her ropes snaps
& breaks. He rears back. Spear
misses. Somehow they both get away.
And we all get one more day worth
living for.

During the next few lines we see scenes from Myst and Exile.
Achenar’s torture room on Mechanical age, his skeleton lamp
and the skull to rose hologram from Stoneship, Saavedro’s
paintings from Amateria, Voltaic, Edanna. The burned books
in Atrus’ library.

ACHENAR
(VO)
It’s not what I expected. Living
lakeside. It’s calmer. Not as
windy. But rain still beats down
like in the Wreck. And it’s hot.
Still hot. Only real difference is
the Screams. Lot closer now. On all
sides. Starting to get on my
nerves. Can’t sleep. Too many
screams. And when I close my eyes,
the Things I see. The faces. My
god, Sirrus. Did we really kill so
many??

Flashback to Exile

SAAVEDRO
Sorry I’m not there to great you in
person but I just didn’t think it
would be wise considering how long
I’ve been stuck here. Trapped in
these lesson ages by two very
greedy little boys. You sons Atrus.
Sirrus and Achenar.

POV Krystal. She turns the pages of Achenar’s journal and
keeps reading.

ACHENAR
What’s the use? What’s the use?
Can’t go on like this. Can’t
THINK!! Have to do something. Have
to keep my mind OFF the dreams.
Maybe -- maybe go south a few days.
Sleep outside. My god, Father. Did
it have to be the same?! Two weeks
working my way through the South
Jungle and for what? More of the
same. More of the same empty
NOTHINGNESS. Can’t take it any
more. Can’t LIVE like this!!!

SAAVEDRO
Of course, they’re not so little
any more. Not so innocent. I’ve
thought a lot about innocence these
past few years, and what happens
when it gets lost.

Krystal looks up from the journal. There are tears in her
eyes.

Krystal goes back into the hut and explores the rest of it.
Achenar keeps talking.

ACHENAR
Went back to the south jungle
today. Hoping I’d missed something.
Saw a group of mangrees playing
under their nests. Thought about
replenishing supplies, but couldn’t
do it. They just looked too
peaceful. Eventually turned to go,
and spied one of ’em watching me.
Their lookout, I suppose. Wonder
how long he knew I was there? Ink
supply getting low. Watering it
down, but might try to make more.
The way the Channelwood
tree-dwellers once taught me. Found
some petals in the south jungle
that might work for the ink. Picked
a few to take back as an
experiment. While picking them, I
noticed something odd about the
mangrees. In the north they all
scatter as soon as they spot me.
But the south tribe only looks
curious. Must be because I never
hunted them.

Montage of mangrees from all over Haven, (wherever I can
find them), the various drawings of them, Krystal watching,
laughing, reading...

ACHENAR
New ink seems okay. Would prefer a
better color, though. I’ll head
back to the south jungle in the
morning. See if I can find
different varieties. I don’t
believe it!! Went back to gather
more petals and found a bunch of
’em already picked. They were lying
in a pile where I’d been working!
Mangrees MUST have done it.
Imitating me? Spent most of the
morning in the watch tower, trying
to observe from a distance. Find
out how they act when I’m not
there. Couldn’t see much, though.
Trees are too thick. WOULD like to
get closer somehow. I suppose I
could build another post, but it’d
have to be different this time. Not
a lot left I can take from the
Wreck. Kinda like the idea of going
all natural.

Krystal leaves the hut, and walks farther down the path,
eventually coming to the second hut.

ACHENAR
How the HECK did Saavedro’s people
do it?! Been weaving support
branches all day and my arms &
chest muscles are killing me!
Mangrees sure got a kick out of
watching, though. One of ’em even
stopped playing long enough to come
over & give me advice. Least,
that’s how it seemed. Wouldn’t stop
chirruping at me! Made me want to
rig up another sound system, see if
I can try and talk back. Oh my god.
It can’t be. It CAN’T. This evening
I was sketching in the post. Trying
to get their expressions right.
Mangrees were playing that game
they like to play. Fruit-tossing.
Ball must’ve rolled under the post.
All of a sudden I heard this cry
I’d never heard before. Sequence of
drawn-out highs and lows. Looked up
& found all of ’em looking at me.
Pointing at the ball and making
that sound. Like they were calling
a name. MY name. THEY’VE GIVEN ME A
NAME! What am I supposed to do with
this, Father?!! What am I supposed
to do?

SCENE SEVEN - MANGREES

KRYSTAL
Come on you, come on!

She’s standing in the hut, her journal spread before her,
playing the fruit throwing game with the mangrees.

KRYSTAL
Throw it! Throw it!

The mangree throws the fruit but it’s too late. The beastie
that tries to eat us has jumped out of the pit. Krystal
laughs and tries again.

KRYSTAL
Achenar taught you well, didn’t he?
He’s really changed. After what he
did in Myst, well, I didn’t expect
this. Playing tag with Mangrees?
There’s no way he can play tag with
mangrees and capture Yeesha, is
there?

She suddenly sobers, stopping mid-call.

KRYSTAL
Yeesha. I’ve got to find her.

The next throw is succesful, the predator collapses. Krystal
runs down the path to the next watchtower.

KRYSTAL
(Dubiously)
Pet the snake?

She laughs for a minute, and then sees the piles of shirts,
the note from Catherine, and hears the memory.

ACHENAR
(VO)
No. No... I mean, yes. Yes! I like
it. It’s just... it’s so soft. I
almost forgot what soft feels like.

Krystal walks down the leaf path and finds the chair.

KRYSTAL
You build your ages like your
father, Achenar. There’s always an
end. (brightly, to Mangrees) Almost
home, little fellows. Almost to the
answer. I don’t understand why
Sirrus did what he did, from what
I’ve seen of his world he also has
regrets, but there’s no use
tarrying here anymore. Yeesha isn’t
here, is she? If only you could
tell me what happened, if only I
knew where she was... Is there an
Age I missed?

POV Krystal as she rides back to the linking chamber. She
waves goodbye to the mangrees and links.

I'm so used to stage plays I want to announce END OF ACT I. (Hey, look at me! I remembered the name of an animal!)

As much as I don't really like the plot of Myst IV, this is actually quite interesting. :blinky:
You're doing a good job of making the one-sided conversations in Myst IV into real conversations.

scene eight - The missing age

Krystal links back to Tomahna. In the distance, on Yeesha's porch, she sees a mysterious figure suddenly link away.

KRYSTAL

Oh no. Who is that?

She runs up to Atrus' bedroom, across to the kitchen, across to Yeesha's room. The bedroom has been torn apart,

KRYSTAL

Oh no. Who has been here?

ACHENAR

(VO)

I knew you'd have one.

KRYSTAL

Achenar.

She sits on Yeesha's bed despairingly.

KRYSTAL

Achenar!

She shoves the pillows aside and finds Yeesha's journal. Slowly she picks it up and reads. As we hear Yeesha's voice we look around the room.

YEESHA

(VO)

Monday. I got this book. Dad gave it to me. I'm going to write in it every night. Saturday, Dad took me to a really neat place today. It's called Serenia and the people there are SOOOO nice. They never forget stuff cause if they do, their Memory Chamber remembers it for them.

Yeesha's Drawings

YEESHA

(VO)

I went inside & saw all the memory globes hanging from the ceiling, just like Sirrus said I would. Monday. Mom said it's too soon to go back to Serenia. I've been thinking though & I don't know if I want my memories put inside a globe when I'm dead. What if I need them?

Krystal sighs and puts down the journal and walks over to the bookcase.

YEESHA

(VO)

Friday Before supper Dad & me changed the lock on my bookshelf. I said since I'm learning D'ni I could change the covers and use everyone's names instead. I won't forget whose older than who, either. He said it really really had to be the REALLY last time but he was glad.

KRYSTAL

(Softly)

D'Ni? Yeesha, did you have to?

Slowly she crossed back to the living room/kitchen, memories flashing about her.

yeesha

You know I'm only ten, Daddy. I don't think I can make a whole world.

ATRUS

(laughs)

You're not making a world, my desert bird. You're making a link to a world. Come on. I'll show you an easier one.

The bridge swings back to the other side. Krystal walks up to the elevator platform.

Tomahna Memory montage

Kyrstal walks back to Atrus and Catherine's bedroom and takes the elevator to the rest of the buildings. NOTE: All this time she looks tired and folorn, not quite knowing what should be done next.

ATRUS

(VO: Journal)

I am always surprised by how good it feels to return home after one of my journeys. In the day heat shimmers off the cliffs, bathing me in unexpected warmth. At night gentle breezes stir the lake, and I often hear Catherine singing to Yeesha. The sound of their voices fills me with such joy. I find myself wondering why I ever left.

CATHERINE

(VO: Memory)

That's the fifth time this week, Atrus. If you insist on blowing the power so often then you must make sure we some kind of backup supply. What if someone gets stuck in the elevator?

YEESHA

(VO: Flashback)

Hey, come here, you've got to see this.

CATHERINE

(VO: Memory)

That was such a good day. I wish, oh, I wish so many things, Atrus. Tell me again that we did the right thing.

ATRUS

(VO: Flashback)

Perhaps the ending has not yet been written.

CATHERINE

– I am being torn in two.
– I am trapped between a mother’s love for her children, and a woman’s loyalty to her husband
– I don’t know if
I must find a way to resolve this. I must break through Atrus’ doubts and get him to see what he cannot.

ATRUS

I doubt I will ever know what caused my sons to become so greedy. I only know that when they looked at the Ages described in my library — fantastic worlds one could travel to easily, simply by touching a Book’s linking panel — they saw only dreams of wealth and power. They devised a plan. An evil plan. When my back was turned, they linked to my Ages, plundered, and destroyed them.

The memories come faster, louder and Krystal sits on a bench, putting her head on her arms on the railing.

YEESHA

I have the key! I have the key! Please!

KRYSTAL

I have the key. I know, somehow...

CUT TO- Yeesha's bedroom. Krystal looks back and forth between the book of D'Ni in her hand and the bookcase. She tries again and again, and at last gets the right combination. Scrambling down the ladder she comes to the deck and sees the Serenia book. Laughing softly, she Links.

I'm pretty sure I made some mistakes back there, but I'm not sure how to fix them. One of these days though I'm going to have to go through and do some editing in Haven. :P

Meanwhile, welcome to Serenia. I seem to have forgotten to do scene breaks though... oh well.

Scene Nine - Serenia

Memory of Yeesha. Krystal looks around frantically, blinking in the sunlight.

KRYSTAL

She's here. She's got to be here.

She starts frantically down the path but slows, looking in wonder at her surroundings.

ATRUS

The first time I placed my hand on Serenia’s linking panel I remember thinking, “This Age will be unlike any I have journeyed to so far.” And it was.

The sky was crisp and clear. The rivers and waterfalls sparkled like diamonds. Even the worn paths threading through canopies of stone took my breath away.

She comes to the water wheel, sees the memory of Sirrus.

KRYSTAL

So Sirrus is here as well, smashing things. Why are you smashing things, Sirrus?

As she approaches the village area we hear a large bell ringing.

anya

I was starting to worry about you. In the dream you always arrived before third bell had rung.

kyrstal

Well, I'm sorry. I came as soon as I could...

anya

Welcome to Serenia. I am Anya, one of the six who now serve as protectors here.

krystal

I'm Krystal. Pleased to meet you.

anya

You may find this hard to believe, but my sisters and I dreamed you were coming.

krystal

If you say so.

anya

You're searching for Yeesha.

krystal

Yes, I am.

anya

I fear she may be in trouble, but we have not seen her since we gave her the necklace two weeks ago.

krystal

You haven't seen her in two weeks? But she's got to be here!

anya

I will gather my sisters to help find her. In the meantime you should consult the memory chamber. She always knows more about what's going on than we do.

krystal

The memory- what?

anya

Follow the ceremonial alley to her doors, and see what insights she had to provide.

Anya turns and leaves. Krystal stares after here.

KRYSTAL

O-kay. Memory chamber. Ceremonial arches. This is slightly weird...

ATRUS

(VO)

Having read Catherine’s descriptive Book, I realize that the plant the Protectors called the “Memory Chamber” is but the fruiting body of a massive fungus. Like any fungus, it recycles dead organic material into nutrients — in this case, “filled” memory globes.

Krystal reaches the memory chamber and looks up at it in awe.

KRYSTAL

Wow. This is impressive.

ACHENAR

(VO)

This is the nastiest funereal I've ever attended.

sirrus

(VO)

Hush, this is important. I want to see if the ceremony is somehow influencing the transfer.

KRYSTAL

Hmmm...

Memories flash by us. We get a nice close look at the flower. Krystal turns and leaves, frowning in confusion. She passes the harverster.

KRYSTAL

Sirrus!

Green light, bomb goes off, Sirus disspaears. Krystal is startled by a voice behind her.

yannin

What happened? This is terrible! How are we supposed to maintain contact with the ancestors if we can't harvest any globes?

KRYSTAL

Well, I don't know. I've never been here and I don't quite understand...

YANNIN

Forgive me. I've seen your face so often in dream that I forget you are still a stranger here.

KRYSTAL

Yes, I am. A stranger.

YANNIN

You've been inside the memory chamber. You've seen the colorful lights crowning her walls. These are the memories taken from my people after their life is gone. In Serenia, the memory chamber stores all our memories, so that future generations can still visit us in Dream.

KRYSTAL

Weird.

yannin

Empty globes for storing our memories are stored under water. And we gather them using the harvester. So if I'm unable to fix it--

KRYSTAL

Bad things will happen.

YANNIN

I must see how bad the damage is. Oh, I was supposed to tell you, my sisters have gathered in the hall of spirits to dream. If you go there when you wake up you may be able to learn more about what happened to Yeesha.

krystal

Okay. Thanks.

yannin

Good luck.

Krystal walks up to the Hall of Spirits and gazes on the sleeping sisters.

KRYSTAL

This is really weird.

She walks back up to the pad to find Anya feeding the butteflies.

anya

She will be all right, won't she? I mean, you wont' stop looking until you find her?

KRYSTAL

No, I won't. I can't let Atrus down.

More to herself than to Anya.

KRYSTAL

I have to find her. I have to.

ANYA

Yeesha used to come here every morning when she stayed with us, and spend hours feeding these butterflies. I think she appreciated them more than anyone else in her family. Including Sirrus and Achenar.

KRYSTAL

(suddenly interested)

You knew them?

anya

I was not a protector when the brothers lived here but I gather they were more interested in the memory chamber and our funereal rites, as if death were something to be feared.

KRYSTAL

That's-- strange. That's very strange. If you learn anything else...

anya

We must trust in the guidence of the Ancestors. If they offer any new insight I will pass it along.

Anya leaves and Krystal sits alone, watching the water.

YEESHA

Wow, it's so beautiful. Hey, is that supposed to be the little boy who died?

ANYA

He's a lot more than that. It represents this whole area, and how everything is interconnected.

YEESHA

By water?

ANYA

It is the source of all life.

ATRUS

One of the stories the Protectors told me (for that is what they call themselves) moves me to this day. Many lifetimes ago, a child from the village contracted a fever and died. His parents — who had loved him very much — decided to bury him under a waterfall, and built a balloon to take him there. The parents’ grief was so strong, however, that when they landed their balloon, they could only carry the child a short way. So they set him down beside a giant flower and slept.

All night the mother’s tears never stopped flowing. Eventually they sank through the ground and bathed the flower’s roots. Moved by the tears, the flower told the parents to carry their child into her pistil. She would preserve his memories so they could visit him whenever they wished. Then the flower passed one of the tears back through the roots, turning it into a container to hold memories, and the father dove underwater to collect it.
And that is how the Memory Chamber first displayed her power to the Serenians.

Krystal returns to find Yannin watching the harvester.

KRYSTAL

Well?

yannin

This is so not good.

krystal

I'd say. Are you going to be able to fix it?

yannin

I'm not sure how I'll be able to repair it. Maybe--

krystal

Yes?

yannin

There's an older harvester, near the memory chamber my ancestors used many years ago. We had to abandon the chamber because it was getting old and the pollen inside the chamber can be deadly.

krystal

Hm. That's not good.

yannin

Mabye, we can take the parts, and use them to fix this one.

KRYSTAL

That's a good idea. Hope it works.

She continues down the path to where an old lady is waiting to go home.

YEESHA

You mean, you have to signal someboyd everytime you want to go home? Why dont' you just sleep here?

ANYA

Because we have families too, you know, and the ones who are still alive sleep in the village.

random protector

There you are.

Krystal starts in surprise. She was wrapped up in the memory and had not noticed the woman.

krystal

I'm sorry, I-- You startled me. My name's Krystal. I'm here to find Yeesha.

random protector

My sister's say you are a friend. But if that is true, why does everything fall apart when you are here?

krystal

I-- don't understand.

random protector

The lifestone is missing. Someone-- diverted the water course and took it out of the chamber.

krystal

I'm sorry. I--

random protector

You are a stranger here. You cannot begin to imagine the threat this poses to my people.

krystal

No, you're right. I can't.

random protector

The memory chamber needs that stone to survive. It nourishes her, keeps strong and healthy so that she can collect our memories after we die. Without it, we may never see our loved ones again.

krystal

I'm sorry.

random protector

I must alert the village. There are more stones on the southern hills but it takes time to find them. If you truley are a friend, you will go the Hall of Spirits and alert my sisters.

krystal

(eagerly

All right.

random protector

Although, if they are still traveling in Dream, they may already know.

KRYSTAL

Maybe.

She turns away and runs straght into Achenar.

KRYSTAL

Achenar!

He climbs up onto the pathway, holding a heavy stone.

KRYSTAL

Achenar! What are you doing?

ACHENAR

Wait, please, listen to me.

KRYSTAL

(sternly)

What are you doing?

ACHENAR

Okay, okay, it doesn't look good, I admit it, but it's not what you think. I'm just taking it for a little while. Borrowing it so to speak.

KRYSTAL

Achenar...

ACHENAR

It's the plan.

KRYSTAL

What plan?

ACHENAR

Sirrus' plan.

KRYSTAL

What do you mean?

ACHENAR

He's got Yeesha. I just want to stop him. He's a nutcase.

KRYSTAL

Where is Sirrus?

ACHENAR

He's here. And don't- let- father- come- Here.

KRYSTAL

Why?

ACHENAR

You'll screw up everything.

KRYstal

I need a better explanation than that, Achenar.

ACHENAR

Find my journal.

KRYstal

Which journal?

ACHENAR

The one from twenty years ago. Sirrus doesn't even know that I kept one.

KRYSTAL

Where is it?

ACHENAR

I hid it, in the stone pillar in the forest near where two rivers are crossing.

krystal

Okay...

ACHENAR

It'll explain everything. Sirrus is mad. He's going to kill father. And I've got to stop him.

KRYSTAL

Achenar! Wait...

She trails off as he goes back toward the forest with his stone. She shrugs and climbs down the bank to the chamber below.

KRYSTAL

All right, the memory stone was there, and now it's not. Achenar took it. That's what the old protector is so upset about. That is a mark against you brother. Of course, Sirrus blew up the harvester. Come on, what gives? Are you working together?

Grumbling she walks down to the old memory chamber. Sirrus is just stepping out.

KRYSTAL

Sirrus!!

He turns, guiltily almost.

sirrus

It's you.

KRYSTAL

Yes, it's me. Nice to see you remember.

sirrus

Thank God you've come.

KRYSTAL

Why?

SIRRUS

Achenar's kidnapped my little sister.

KRYSTAL

What for?

SIRRUS

He says he'll kill her if I don't help him steal Serenia's treasures.

KRYstal

Well, that's interesting.

SIRRUS

Look, I know you have no reason to trust me.

krystal

You know what? For once you've got something right. After what you did to your father, after what you tried to do to me? You're here to wreck this world too. I saw you--

SIRRUS

You saw me blow up the harvester--

KRYSTAL

Among other things--

SIRRUS

but I only did it to stop Achenar from poisening the memory chamber.

KRYSTAL

And why would he do that?

SIRRUS

His confinement on Haven drove him totally insane. All he cares about now is destroying everything father created!

krystal

Seems to me, that it wasn't that long ago that that was all you cared about too!

SIRRUS

We have to stop him.

krystal

How?

SIRRUS

Go to Tomahna and find my father, explain everything that's happened here.

krystal

And what will that do?

SIRRUS

For some reason Achenar is terrified of father. Maybe, if you bring him here, the three of us can somehow manuever my sick brother into a trap.

KRYSTAL

You know what? I don't think that's a very good plan. What are you going to do?

sirrus

I'll try to get Yeesha away from him while you're gone.

KRYSTAL

What makes you think you'll succed?

sirrus

Now go.

KRYSTAL

Hey, where are you going?

sirrus

(loosting patience

Go!

KRYSTAL

Sirrus!

sirrus

(calmer)

Before it's too late.
