I just found out something interesting with the tower rotation, don't know if it's documented anywhere. If you turn the tower to face the spaceship, the elevator has to turn half way up to line up with the ladders. However, if you use ctrl+shift+numpad+ to crank up the brightness and then look up the elevator shaft, the ladder is facing the library. So the map rotates the outside shell, while the elevator rotates the inside ladder room :D.

In image 01 we see that the tower is facing the spaceship, and 02 confirms it. 03 shows a view from inside the elevator and 04 confirms that the ladders are lined up with the front and back of the elevator. Now for the interesting bit. Images 05 and 06 are looking up the shaft with the brightness turned up, where we see what appears to be a ladder.

We know that the tower is rotated to face the spaceship, and that the elevator has to rotate mid-way to face the ladder, so how can there be a ladder visible in the last two images? Unless.. the map in the library rotates the outside of the tower and the inside is rotated with the elevator!

This would explain why we are not allowed to move around inside the elevator while it is moving - if we walked up to the bars and looked up, we might end up seeing this phenomenon in action!

Wait, so what you're saying is...

When you turn the tower on the map, the outside lines up as shown in figure 01. However, when you look up the elevator shaft, you'll find that the ladders are lined up with the library, not with the rocket and the opening, so in order for the ladders to be properly aligned with the opening, the entire inside of the tower would have to rotate with the elevator? Intriguing...

That's essentially what you said, but for some reason I was having trouble following it when you said it.

I can tell you from MYST flying, that when you are in the tower, you aren't actually in the tower that you see from the ground. You're in an invisible place just above it.

I guess that the inside model was too big to fit into the outside one.. That's even stranger! But the view from the ground floor is still un-aligned.

Yet more proof that the ending really HASN'T been written! :D

That's weird, nice job spotting it! Stuff like this isn't unusual in the newer Myst games, even if they're remakes of older ones. Some, like Uru Live, are so spectacularly glitchy when it comes to this that you get things like avatars falling through the floor and below the cavern lake, avatars getting trapped inside doors, etc. I even recall one person a while back getting 'trapped' in the Mechanical elevator in realMYST; somehow the camera got shifted all the way to the floor outside the elevator and the player couldn't move it.
