Minecraft Amazingly, there isn't a topic about it yet.

So, I finished Portal 2 about two weeks ago. Do you know what I started playing immediately afterward? That's right: Minecraft.

By that I mean "started playing it AGAIN immediately afterward". I bought the game the same day that I ordered Portal 2 on Amazon. Before that, I had played the free version, which, amazingly, can still be found here. Let me tell you, if you want to add a little more excitement to the game, you'd best go with the full version.

For those who haven't played it: the basic idea of Minecraft, even in the old version, is to build and to explore. The game procedurally generates the world around you by simulating real geological processes like erosion, along with forming more precious stones, like diamonds, deeper under ground. So, you can explore and build on the islands above ground, or, as the name suggests, you can dig into the many caves in each world to discover underground springs and lava flows, not to mention diamonds and gold.

While all of these things are true of both versions, the full version adds another couple of layers to the adventure. The day/night cycle takes advantage of the more realistic lighting, which is also used for another purpose: spawning monsters, which appear wherever there isn't light. So, exploring gains an element of danger, adding the need for a well-lit shelter during the night, and the need to place torches along the walls of the caves you explore.

So, who else here plays? I know that Tweek plays on a server, and Myst fans being natural explorers, I'd bet lots of others here play it too.

I play it and I really like it, but the monsters scare the absolute script out of me. Those dang spiders.

That's exactly why I don't play it. Posted Image

After I turned the sound on (I played a long time without sound) my own digging freaked me out...

You're not alone there. Even when it's my own because I was holding it while trying to open a chest...
I haven't actually played for months, the last time I did was around the time of the Hallowe'en update. It got too samey for me, honestly - explore caves, mine stuff, build outposts, explore more caves, etc... I did spend a few days (real-world time, it must have been several weeks in-game time) following the coastline, finding that my spawn point was on the shore of a large lake or small inland sea, and another few days (in-game time) exploring out into the land, but not actually finding any interesting/large caves. Since then, I just haven't had the motivation to go back. The concept of Hell never interested me, and I found all the minerals and made the best equipment, and then ran out of ideas of what to do.

This coming from a guy who plays Half-Life and its sequels?

Honestly yeah. Maybe it's because I can just pull out my revolver and just one shot zombies, whereas in Minecraft if I see an enemy my health drops 50%.

It's the enemies I don't see that I really hate.

Oh, I feel ya. I've lost some nice items to Creepers. Still, that just means that there's an actual risk as you explore the caves, beyond having to respawn at the beginning. :D

But hey, I have a way to combat that, too. You know the Eder Tomahns, the rest houses, along the walls of the Great Shaft? I just dig myself one of those whenever I make significant progress through a cave, and I make sure to put in a bed and a chest. Gives you a place to respawn closer to your goal, whatever that might be, and a place to store the more valuable stuff that you find, too. :)

I like Minecraft, but it was being buggy on my machine last time I tried to play :/ I only play on Peaceful or (occasionally) Easy mode.

So, I'm sorta bored now that it's summer and I'm considering picking this up. Is it worth the 14 euros?

If you think you'll like it, it is probably worth 14 euros, although it is still Beta release.

Definitely worth the price. Especially if you're playing on a server with some creative friends. :)

Speaking of which, did you ever get a hold of your server host?

I caved and bought it. I'm also making a bunch of Myst character skins that I'll post here when I'm done.

We should try to play together on multiplayer sometime. I'm not sure how that works though....

It's alright, just see if he can send me his entire server folder, then I'll just swap out the World data and permissions.
