I need to know for a poem in the works, where the narrator accidentally grazes a wasp nest and, losing his head, decides to try and fend them off rather than bolt. How big do the nests usually get and how many bugs are usually found therein?

Quote

A well established colony of Polistine wasps (common paper wasps) can have two hundred or more individuals living on a nest the size of a man's outstretched hand.

It has to be small enough that the narrator could forget it's there until he unthinkingly chucks something in the general direction.
