Even though it interests me in principle, it's almost impossible for me to write a sensible reply to this question after the countless retcons we've had to endure. Frankly, I'm not sure I care anymore. Suspension of disbelief can only go so far. I'm beginning to think the M/R/D universe needs a reboot - but it needs to be a proper one, not like how J.J. Abrams butchered Star Trek.

I prefer to think of it as "J.J. Abrams made an unimaginative action movie loosely inspired by Star Trek". To call it Trek is insulting. :(
