I created a patch to fix the crash on start problem with RealMyst CD version, if you want the patch please PM me otherwise just buy the RealMyst GOG version, it is only $6.00. I am not sure if the patch works with any other versions of game so I discourage use on any other version but if you do decide to try it please tell me if it works.

Can you give us more information about the issue and the fix? I get nervious when I see direct links to executable files.

Edit: Matt8110 had a direct link to the patch but kindly edited his first post. Thanks, Matt8110! :) The rest of this thread referrs to our discussion of the matter.

I downloaded and scanned the file with 20 different malware/virus engines and it looked clean. But that guarantees nothing.

Again, I'd still like to know more about this patch (and frankly about you since you're a first time poster.) Have you made this available on other Myst sites?

Please respond, Matt8110.

The issue is that when you start realmyst it loads the first few bytes of the dni files into memory to make sure they are dni files, it then loads the rest of the file, well whoever programmed that particular part of realmyst assumed that the full file would be loaded into the same memory location as the first few bytes, which if you have ever worked with memory you will know it doesn't work like that, that is the reason why sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't, because sometimes it does load into the same location, I simply hex edited and fixed the issue in the exe, now I did not create the hex fix, I found it online after a lot of searching, and I cannot find it again, sorry for that, anyways, I decided that I should create a patch for it so that people who don't want to go through all the trouble of hex editing the game didn't have to, and I assure you, there is no malware or viruses or anything, I do however recommend that you backup your realmyst.exe file before trying this as it has only been tested on my retail CD version.

I understand if you don't trust me, all I wanted to do was help people who had the same issue I had. Would it help if I uploaded the fixed realmyst exe rather than an installer?

Have you made this available on other Myst sites? Has any known Myst fan tested this?

I appreciate you saying you want to help. One of the main things we like doing here and on other boards is helping each other.

Please don't link to another .exe file. You know as well as I an executable file can be given any name you wish.

No I have not made it available on any other site, and I am not sure what you mean by "Known Myst Fan" but I am the only one who has tested my fix, and I understand that an exe can be named anything, fortunately after some digging in my history I was able to find the page where I found the fix, http://www.gog.com/f..._startup/post14 , The post by Spinvis.

I created the fix because I didn't think people would wanna go through all the trouble of hex editing their exe plus I am not sure how many know how.

Ah. That's the info I wanted. So you took Jehon the Scribe's fix and made a new .exe file? How is it packaged?

I used Install Creator to create an installer for it, all it does is replace your realmyst exe with the fixed one.

By the way, Have you read this thread on the board?

Myst games in Vista & Windows 7 (incl 64-bit) For those with a spare PC and who have found the standard fixes have fun

Especially the bottom of this post:
realMyst has been updated to work with Vista 64-bit by GoodOldGames.com (it needs Windows XP compatibility setting, but that's all). This newer version works better than the hacked version did

One more thing. You're new and I forgot to give you our customary welcome.
:tomato:

There. Take that! ;)

So what do you think after reading that thread? Do we need your patch of should we all just spend $6.00 on the GoG version?

Personally, I would prefer a free patch over rebuying something I already have even if it's just $6.

I suppose my patch is unneeded since $6.00 really isn't that much.

Invite others to send you a PM if they want the patch. Then you can PM them the link.

Sound like a good solution?

Edit your first post if you think this is a good idea.

Thanks for making this available again, the first iteration of this fix is incredibly difficult to locate and works wonders.

Are you referring to Jehon the Scribe's hex editing method?

Yeah. It definitely fixed everything right up, but due to the suspicious nature of the various Myst communities, I always had to get the fix from shady web sites. :blinky:
