I have decided to refresh all my myst games and been reading some comments here to figure out the best way

Yes, there might be various fixes to get various original games working, but I feel now is the time to spend a small amount of money to get the latest download releases.

This is for windows 7 by the way. I have no intention of upgrading beyond this version

There appears to be two main places to get them, steam and gog. What's the deal with these two? And which is best?

Quick game summary

myst.
Will go with realmyst masterpiece (and maybe std masterpiece since it is so cheap) my versions won't work

riven
Likewise, my original discs won't work

exile
This one doesn't seem to want to work either, but nor does it seem to be available to buy. Will I have to work on a fix

revelations
Same as exile, except I have not yet tried it on win7

uru
Well that is available free, so no questions here

end of ages
I get the impression that my original copy will work. Is that the case

I thought it was worth getting a summary of the situation on a thread as all the info is a bit spread out

thanks

Don't worry, just seen that it is all thereat the beginning of the thread. I assume that info is still correct? Can't find a way to edit my post. Sorry.

Will need to re check my exile. I had thought it was working but wouldn't last night

However I would like to know the deal difference between gog and steam. Why is it all so much cheaper on steam yet everyone recommend gog

Thanks.

My version of exile will not work on win7 64. It installs ok, but when I try to load it nothing happens. No error message, nothing.

For Riven (and Myst I think) you can check ScummVM (http://forums.scummv...886b343eba6f7d2) Riven is not officially supported, but it should work if you get the right build.

The reason many people recommend GoG vs Steam is because of the lack of DRM. With Steam, you need to have and log into a Steam account when you want to play and redownload the games. You can have your Steam account on multiple computers, but if you wanted to install something that you don't have installed and you don't have an internet connection, you're a bit screwed. With GoG, you get installer files, and you can keep them and install if you have the file but no internet connection, and you can install on multiple computers without needing a seperate account to be running.

Just to add my penny's worth...

Myst and Riven - GOG version, I am with Capella on the reason why...
Exile - DVD version runs beautifully
Revelation - DVD Version, again no issues
Myst 5 - original discs, no issues
URU - Disc version, no issues
URU Live - no issues
RealMyst - Cyan version, Steam, no issues (Have the original version from GOG, no issues)

All running on Win 7 64 bit.

In fact you can get the whole suite from GOG for under £20 although the RealMyst version is the original not Masterpiece. http://www.gog.com/game/real_myst

Hope you get them all up and running ;-)

Maybe my problem is I have the cd versions of exile.

Sounds like gog is for me, especially as I have pc and laptop which are soMexico interchangeable on usage. Thanks for info
