Shorah! I've just been bopping around the internet this morning and thought I'd stop in again. It's been a long time. I've recently started playing MYST with my oldest sons and thinking about everyone here and in the CyanChat a lot. I was lurking around reading stuff and saw where someone else posted how much this forum meant to them in high school and I'd echo the sentiments. This was such a wonderful place to hang out and I'm glad to see that it's still trucking along. How has everyone been?

Shorah, been good, still drop in here on (almost) a daily basis, not a lot of activity these days which is a bit of a shame but glad to see the site is still going.
Still playing Myst and (my all time favourite) Riven, love em' both to bits...

Yes, it is good to see you again. I love to hear when people who have been part of the community break in a new generation of MYST players. Hope your sons enjoy it as much as we have all these years. Don't give them too many hints, though. Make them suffer through enjoy every puzzle and every inch of the game. ;)

Hi de hi All,

I like to check in twice a day !

Nope.....not playing any of my Myst games at the moment.

Looking to now buy a 64 bit Windows 10 computer shortly......once I get financial approval from the wife !

Then I'll no doubt spend months trying to get the whole lot of those old loved games working again in the 64 bit environment of WIN 10.....lol

The reason for the new PC ?........Obduction of course

How quiet is this board nowadays !

Well.....I've now spent £850 on a new PC.

Decided to build it myself......so I've got 850 quid worth of bits in boxes in my spare room.....and can't quite pluck up the courage to to built it up ! lol

Between this PC and my Kickstarter money paid for Obduction, Cyan has cost me a pretty penny......yet again.

......just as well that I love them so much.

( wonder if anyone will read this message ?)

I'm never here...
I think I'm gonna have to get a new PC to play Obduction, too. This PC struggled to even play the trailer properly!

We're all going to need to build new PCs for Obduction. I haven't started yet but time is running out so...I guess I better get busy. I was sort of waiting for the official hardware specs to come out of Cyan but I'm thinking any medium to high end build would suffice. As usual we probably need to focus on the audio and especially the video hardware.

hmmm Have the recommended hardware specs been announced? I've not been looking much at the Cyan site lately and have I've not received a Backer e-mail regarding this.

Where's Capella? She is always here but has not posted lately in this thread. *poke*

Ahhhhhh......people are here ! lol

I used CustomPC magazine, April 2016, to build my PC.

They give a spec every year, in the April issue, for a PC that can be seriously overclocked.

It's a step by step guide that numptys like me need.

I build my last PC from their specs and it lasted me for about 5 years.

I've followed this years guidelines but added an extra 8MB of memory and beefed up the skylake processor to a better one.

Just built it at the weekend and it runs like an express train.....and I've not ever looked at overclocking it yet.

Pretty stressful building it up.....but got there in the end.......where is Obduction ? lol

"numpty" I had to Google that.
a stupid or ineffectual person.

Nope. That's not you. You built a great machine, twice. You know what you're doing.
Skylake is a great processor architecture...but will Obduction support it? Just KIDDING! We can make it work.

What are the specs on your video card?

*musing about splitting this thread to a more technical forum*

I've been thinking about buying a laptop instead of a desktop, when this machine finally kicks it (which I doubt will be long - it's 8 years old this autumn, and is still running windows XP and giving me problems). Do you guys think it's likely I'll be able to run Obduction on a new laptop when it comes out? Really, it's the only hi-spec game I would want to play.

Hi A'Reandal,

I went for this graphics card -
Asus STRIX R9 380 Gaming 2GB GDDR5 DVI-I DVI-D HDMI Display Port PCI-E Graphics Card

So far it's been great.

It's a balancing act buying a card between great performance and not paying bonkers much money

Of course there is now the VR issue to consider.....but a lot of websites are saying to hold off buying your VR capable graphics card till next year as the prices will fall as the whole VR thing takes off properly.

My PC is VR ready with the exception of the graphics card....it'll change that when the time comes lol

Your video card looks great but my job has moved from knowing all of the computer hardware specs to more server, scripts, and software areas. In other words, I need to get back in the game of desktop technology to build a new PC. That's okay: We all need to do that every few years, :)

As always. That's not changed in 20 years.

Again, I need to restart my research on component specs, but I wonder if VR tech is a great consideration with Obduction. I have PCs at work that support Oculus Rift and they're built for business, not gaming. (Sometimes we "test" the hardware before releasing it to the users.) ;)

Interesting stuff.......

So have you actually used the 3D headset......what's it like ?

They are soooo very expensive just now that I really couldn't justify the cost for the limited amount of time I actually spend on the PC.

If they start to fall in price then maybe........but it's not going to this year......I've spent all ma pennies. lol

Ahhh! How did I miss your post? I just now noticed it.

To clarify, I didn't actually use it, some of my colleagues did; I just noticed them.

And...As it is you can ignore my previous post. It turns out they were using a head set for a phone, not a computer. After some research I found what I thought to be the case: These business PCs wouldn't handle an Oculus Rift. The video card is too weak. Now I'm making sense. :soumyeah:

Ha, ha,ha.......

I see the stuff from E3 relating to the VR is pretty exciting.

I think the prices will start to fall in the next year or so once it all takes off properly.

Maybe, just maybe it will eventually be affordable to all us poor wee people who don't have bucks to scatter about like leaves.......maybe......

Sometimes the old names and faces come back for a time. Glad to see some familiar people - and new ones too.
