I was looking at my profile editor and noticed there is no place to put my gender. I find that rather ambiguous. It's not something that important, but say I never know who is which gender and I go to Mysterium and this person I always thought was a she turns out to be a he! I don't know, somehow it seems awkward not to know someone's gender. We can optionally fill in location, birthday, interests etc. Wouldn't it make sense to have the option of indicating gender?

Just a thought.

Ulysses

I'm male by the way smile.gif

Hm, I think adding a gender was voted against before, to avoid prejudice. Not sure.

It would be trivial to add if it's a common request.

Well it could be an option. You could choose to indicate your gender or not. Just like location. That way if you feel it's prejudiced you can just opt out right?

Edit: sorry didn't see the poll before replying. That's what I get for not being observant enough. happens all the time when I play myst wink.gif

Why do I have a male symbol despite having set myself as female?

Why does it have to be displayed next to every post? I think that it would be more suitable in the Profile page, at least... As it is, the male/female symbol is taking up horizontal space that would otherwise be used to display the post text, which means that there is less space in which to display the posts... It may not be visible to those that have huge widescreen monitors, but I'm currently posting from a 1024x768 laptop monitor, and the male/female symbol translates into a hefty loss of space.

Please place it somewhere less obtrusive. smile.gif I know that many people here are very proud about their masculinity (like Jerle) or feminity (like Patrick), but... wink.gif

How is it any different from fields like "Location"?

No, it isn't. It's taking up space that was previously used for…

…nothing.

No.

In the vast majority of cases, one's gender is less mutable than their location. wink.gif There has been some cases of people changing their location field (like Tay), so it is theoretically more useful for it to exist next to each post. Gender information is more similar to the birthdate, and that is safely secured in the profile page...

Except when it was used for what it was meant to, i.e. hosting the username. blurp.gif Some usernames (like wandering_nomad's; I'm sorry, Nommie wink.gif) are long enough that, in lower resolutions, adding the gender symbol simply makes it overflow, doubling the height of that row, which in turn allows less posts to be visible at once on the same screen.

Make it go away!! cries.gif pout.gif

SBS wink.gif

PS: Oh, and by the way, the male/female images seem to be ill-aligned to the space given to them; perhaps you should remove that 1px border around the image, Chucker?

Now that's silly. Hardly anyone ever changes their location field either.

True. I suppose I could make it an option. But I really don't feel like it right now.

So you're arguing against long user names wink.gif

Actually, I just checked, and wandering_nomad's name definitely does not cause overflow, and wouldn't with a gender next to it either.

I updated them (flush your caches), stripping off the incorrect border, making them smaller (16x16 instead of 18x18) in the process.

Looking excellent! Also, I must say I'm exceptionally glad that the female one isn't pink. I'm tired of pink being associated with females. The blue looks more dignified. And if you DARE make it pink, you're dead.

The poll had 9 people, or 100%, voting for the second option, so at that time, it seemed to me like the decision was made. Now it's not as clear any more, but I don't care. smile.gif
