Hi Everyone,
I recently tried installing realMyst for my daughter who was watching me play Myst V. I found that when I ran the game it would go to a black screen and return to th desktop. After allot of running around the web and reading allot of forum entries I have it running. I'm not sure what actually triggered it to work but I did all of the following: 1 - Installed realMyst from CD (used Minimal install, I found the full install worked but very slow gameplay - not sure why...didn't investigate further) 2 - Installed the patch v1.11 from Ubisoft ( http://www.ubi.com/US/Downloads/Info.aspx?dlId=62 ) 3 - Installed Creative's ALchemy for my X-Fi sound card (supports direct sound for Windows Vista) 4 - Modified the shortcut to the following compatability settings: - Window 98 / Windows ME - Disable visual themes - Disable desktop composition I hope this helps someone out!! FYI, My system specs are as follows: ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Motherboard AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Processor Corsair 2GB PC-6400 RAM EVGA GeForce 7900GT KO 256MB GDDR2 RAM 2X Western Digital Caviar 250MB SATAII Drives (RAID 0) Seatronic 550W Power Supply Windows Vista Ultimate |

I can confirm this as I just got my copy of realMyst up and running on my Vista box. I do want to point out though that the game performance didn't seem to be effected as much by the install size but the patch. I noted after installed the v1.11 patch that gameplay went from smooth to unplayable. It's a shame too, not only to you miss out on fixes but extra config options as well. I tried fiddling with the settings in the WIN_INIT.DAT file, but none of the changes I made seemed to make a difference. If you have an nVidia card, you can use the control panel to override some of the game settings and otherwise crank the graphics up. To do this, go to your nVidia Control Panel (found in Vista's control panel... go figure). On the left, under 3D settings, choose Manage 3D settings. Choose the Program Settings tab. Then click Add and select realMyst.exe (it will be in your installation directory). Below, you can specify setting for just realMyst and tell the driver to ignore the game and/or global setting and use what you specify. Crank 'em up. Really causes the game to look sharp. Quick specs: Intel Core2Duo 2.4 GHz GSkill 2GB RAM XFX GeForce 8800GTS Western Digital Caviar 250MB SATAII Antec TruPower 550W Power Supply Windows Vista Ultimate Edit: Additional note: without the v1.11 patch (and if it were installed I'm not sure it will make a big difference), the game seems to crash quite a bit in the tower. Especially when viewing the hint plaques to unlock the ages. |

This is great news ... but I would like to know how you both got the game to install in the first place. My copy will not even install. I get the initial splash screen with the install button and after I click install it starts the install shield process, gets to 99% and then freezes. I've done all the settings prior to running the install program and still nothing.

That said, after I installed Vista I made a number of tweaks, including installing all updates. First and foremost was turning off UAC, it bothered me that I had to confirm all my actions... even as the administrator. That would be the first thing I would try (if you haven't already). Something else that's worth a try: you can go to the install directory on the realMyst CD and set a compatibility mode for the setup.exe file. Sorry I can't be of more help on the installer. |

I always do this for older games and all programs for Vista already. Will give the UAC a shot (can't help but think of Doom). |
