Okay, here is the deal, I got the Myst Tenth Anniversary set, two of the games are useless to me. I can't play Riven, I've tried everything, patches, you name it I've tried it. The GSPD patches, don't work dvd version doesn't come with one of the files. I even did the Mohawk trick. The quicktime files are copied and everything.
I, with nothing else to do, tried installing the 6.3 Quicktime. I'm running Windows Xp with Sp 2. None of my drivers for anything are conflicting the game. Here it comes. -I run it with QT 7, nothing, doesn't even start. -I run it under compatibility mode, black screen then to desktop. -I get QT 6, nothing. -I run compatibility with QT 6, runs fine until the first screen (Where Atrus Speaks) just freezes at him. Although, if I quick really fast before, it skips the video then freezes at the second screen (The starting Age). I'm extremely angry, two games out of a three game box don't work, thank god for realMyst. Although, I really want to play Riven, the box lied to me, even the Ubisoft site does, claiming running in compatibility mode fixes all problems! |

I'm beginning to think that has more to do with some of the updates that have been applied to XP / SP2. I was able to install and run this game great in XP all through the original and SP1 versions. I can even play the game in SP2 as long as I don't update XP any further. This may very well be tied in with why it will not play on Vista as well.

I'm personally thinking of installing a second desktop (98) to try to see if it works, sucks that it is a dvd though. I would have it running on a different computer by now

It's not XP/SP2 necessarily, as I am still able to run Riven fine on my rig, fully updated. Of course, I originally installed Riven almost a year ago, and I suppose a recent update could be conflicting with the install somehow. None of the updates have interfered with my current install though. I had trouble getting Riven to run originally of course, but was eventually able to get it running using the tips on the Technical forum here on this site(actually, that's how I first found this site). Looking over my install, I see I'm running in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode with 256 colors and 640 x 480 resolution checkboxes checked. I made the Mohawk change also, and copied Quicktime 3 files to my Riven directory from somewhere (I guess the link from the technical FAQ; I don't think I did the install from DVD as I was worried about botching my iTunes install). I also apparently did the GSPD patch. IF you need any other info from my system, I'll look it up for you. Hope you get it working. |

Hi, all!
I've decided to replay Myst 1-4, and I was going to begin Riven today. However, following the install, the game simply refuses to launch when I ask it to, no matter how I do it - I don't even get an error message, nothing happens at all. I've tried the compatibility options, but they seem to have no effect. I'm running a version 1.0.2.0 that came in my "Myst - The Collection" box (so it's an Ubi-reprint, I'm pretty sure, although I think the game data is completely the same as with an original release)... frankly, I'm not sure what to do, and I've reinstalled it about three or four times with the same results. Ideas? :/ ~D. ETA: I should add that while my current computer is a recent purchase I've never had problems running Riven on Windows XP before. That's why I'm a little puzzled. ETA2: I only just now realized that I've made a bit of a duplicate thread, as Zeos seems to post about the exact same problem in his/her thread from yesterday - I'll check that one. Mods, please excuse, and feel free to lock this topic. |

I had this exact same problem only today, but the 98/ME compatibility mode plus 256 colors and 640 x 480, as Vexis Larseker says, works for me.
On the other hand, the game now runs for me, but completely without sound. o_o ~D. |

Go to START > RUN > type DXDIAG > click OK > after the screen load click on the SUNS tab > move the slider to BASIC > click OK or EXIT. There is another way to do this, but I forget where it is. |
