Alright, after much trial I have determined how to get Myst Masterpiece to run correctly on Windows XP SP2. Here's what you need to do:
- Uninstall Quicktime from Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs (if Quicktime prompts you make sure to select to uninstall everything including the Quicktime system components) - Install Myst Masterpiece and the included Quicktime version (4.0) - Get the Windows 2000 Myst ME Patch available at fileplanet (http://www.fileplanet.com/58776/50000/fileinfo/Myst-Masterpiece-Edition:-Windows-2000-Patch), there is also a patch available from Mysterium (http://www.mysterium.ch/myst/mystmaster2k_e.exe) which I believe is the same but I have't personally verified it myself. -Run the patch program (select the directory the Myst EXE is in in the patcher and patch it) -Right click the Myst EXE, go to compatibility and select to run the program in compatibility mode for Windows 2000 (as unintuitive as that might sound, it wont work in any other mode, the patch doesnt set it to work for Windows XP without compatibility) -Disabling visual themes and turning off advanced text services in the same dialog box certainly won't hurt And there you go! Its possible to do this without installing the included version of quicktime, but many glitches will occur otherwise. Quicktime 7.x messes up the sound and just doesnt work that great, and in my experience Quicktime 6.5.2 still had slightly questionable sound but would cause some rooms to hang. You can always reupgrade Quicktime later if you need. This method will it will work fine on even some of the toughest systems to get Myst running on. Let me know how this works for everyone |
